About

The Scottish Student Forensic Research Symposium (SSFRS) was founded in 2014 as a student-led research symposium designed to showcase the current research in forensic disciplines being undertaken across Scotland. It combines guest speakers from both academia and the field with student oral presentations and poster displays to create an exciting, interactive environment for attendees. This is a great opportunity to foster collaborations between future forensic science professionals and increase awareness of the breadth and depth of the subject area.

The first symposium held on 14 March 2014 at University of Strathclyde was a collaboration between students at the Universities of Strathclyde and Dundee. It was attended by approximately 100 delegates from nine institutions across Scotland. The Key Note Speaker was Professor Sue Black and the event also included a panel discussion chaired by Professor Lorna Dawson, Professor Niamh Nic Daéid, Professor Caroline Wilkinson, and Professor Sue Black.

The second symposium was held on 27 March 2015 at the University of Dundee and was a collaboration between students at the University of Dundee and University of the West of Scotland. The event was attended by approximately 120 students from 15 institutions. The Key Note Speaker was Dr. Nick Carey and the panel discussion was chaired by Professor Sue Black, Professor Niamh Nic Daéid, Professor Lorna Dawson, and Dr. Nick Carey.

The third symposium was held on 1 April 2016 at the University of Glasgow and was organized by students at the University of Glasgow.

The fourth symposium was held on 26 March 2018 at the University of Dundee and was a collaboration between students at the Universities of Dundee and Glasgow. The Key Note Speakers were Jane Officer, the lead forensic toxicologist at the Scottish Police Authority, and Dr. Craig McKenzie, a forensic chemistry expert from the University of Dundee. The event included a series of discussion forums where students, divided into groups according to their area of research and degree level, had the chance to discuss their research and trends in forensic science with each other and forensic experts. The forensic experts who took part in the discussion forums included Dr. Calum Morrison, Dr. Craig McKenzie, Dr. Lucina Hackman, Dr. Diana Swales, Dr. Helen Langstaff, and Miss Laura Daly.
