Multicellular organisms have a hierarchical structural organization, in which any one system is made up of numerous parts and is itself a component of the next level.
Systems of specialized cells within organisms help them perform the essential functions of life.
1.1. Hierarachy of Life
Understand: Life is organized in a hierarchical manner, with each level building upon the previous one and as you move up the hierarchy, new properties emerge that are not present at lower levels.
Know:
(a.) Describe the levels of biological organization and provide examples of each level.
(b.) Explain what is meant by “emergent properties” and provide examples.
Practice:
1.2. Enzymes
Understand: Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts, meaning they speed up chemical reactions within living organisms. They play a vital role in various bodily functions, including digestion, metabolism, and cellular processes.
Know:
(c.) Summarize the importance of enzymes, their role in biochemical reactions and model how enzymes work.
(d.) Identify factors that affect enzyme activity and interpret the results of an enzyme experiment.
(e.) Use the concept “chemical structure determines biological function” to explain why enzymes do or do not work.
Practice:
1.3. Cells
Understand: Cells have diverse structures, shapes and sizes because different types of cells have specialized functions and their structure determines their function.
Know:
(f.) Describe a cell’s function (job or capability) based on its structure (shape, size, types of organelles).
(g.) Identify unknown cells based on the organelles present.
(h.) Identify potential organ donors based on compatible cell surface markers, weight, age, blood type and exercise level.
Practice:
1.4. Structure Determines Function
Understand: Interactions among the components of a biological system give rise to complex properties and damage at the cell level results in damage to the entire organism.
Know:
(i.) Provide examples of how the structure determines the function of cells, tissues and organs and how damage at the cell level eventually impacts the health of the organism.
(j.) Summarize and model how digestion, transport and excretion require interaction and communication between organs in animal and plant systems
