The symposium takes place in the framework of two exhibitions: ARTSPACE GERMANY, and UNDERLYING from The Mekong Art and Culture Project.

A considerable number of Thai artists studied arts abroad. They studied foreign standards and international standards in depth, and had to find their own standpoint as foreigners. But finally they made it. They majored, earned local fame outside their own country. Finally they returned home with a degree and recognition from studying arts abroad. But what seemed to be a privilege often turns out the beginning of an estrangement from one´s home and home standards and cultural language.

We asked Sutthirat Supaparinya, Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch to join us in a reflection about the question: was it worth going abroad?

Dr. Ursula Zeller (ifa – Institut of Foreign Relations, Germany) and

Dr. Apinan Poshyananda (Centre of Contemporary Art at the Ministry of Culture, Thailand ) will be talking about state support for the arts. In particular they will consider the role of the arts in the outreach of a state outside its own boundaries and the degree of public support for the interior growth of the arts.

Das Symposium findet im Rahmen zweier Ausstellungen statt: KUNSTRAUM DEUTSCHLAND, und UNDERLYING vom The Mekong Art and Culture Project.

Eine beachtliche Anzahl von thailändischen Darstellern studierte Kunst im Ausland. Sie lernten vertieft die ausländischen und internationalen Standards kennen und hatten als Ausländer ihren eigenen Standpunkt. Schlussendlich schafften sie es. Sie wurden besser, machten sich auch außerhalb ihres Landes einen Namen und kehrten heim mit einem anerkannten Kunsthochschul Abschluss.

Was allerdings scheint wie eine Besonderheit erweist sich häufig als Anfang einer Entfremdung von dem eigenen Land, dessen Standards und der Muttersprache. Wir fragten Sutthirat Supaparinya, Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch nach ihrer Meinung hierüber: Hat es sich gelohnt ins Ausland zu gehen?

Das Symposium findet im Rahmen zweier Ausstellungen statt: KUNSTRAUM DEUTSCHLAND, und UNDERLYING vom The Mekong Art and Culture Project.

Dr. Ursula Zeller (ifa – Institut of Foreign Relations, Deutschland) und Dr. Apinan Poshyananda (Centre of Contemporary Art at the Ministry of Culture, Thailand ) werden über die Staatliche Förderung für Kunstprojekte diskutieren. Im Besonderen werden sie hierbei auf die Rolle von Kunst außerhalb der eigenen Grenzen und den Grad von öffentlicher Unterstützung für den Anstieg der Anzahl weiterer Kunstprojekte eingehen.
