0e: Diatonic Transposition

In the Theory Section you find some explanations about two kinds of basic transformations: flatward (or sharpward) alterations and downward (or upward) diatonic transpositions. This tutorial introduces a prominent application of diatonic transposition, namely the sequencing of a given pattern or model. First we use a simple arpeggiated 6-chord, later we use an elaboration of that same chord as the model. We explain step by step what happens in the movie.

    1. You may learn in the theory section that the mechanics of the instrument is based on the identifcation of 12-fold flatward alteration with a single diatonic transposition downwards by one scale degree. Just in order to get that context clear you see in the beginning of the movie seven instances of the flatward alteration of a 6th-chord. Here the alteration amount is set to 1. Three fingers touch scale degrees 3, 5, and 8 (in the example the 3rd degree is played in a lower octave register). With every flatward alteration all three audible tone syllables change. You may also watch the display of the mode selector in order to follow the alteration process through the mode names from C-Ionian over C-Mixolydian, C-Dorian, etc to Cb-Locrian and Cb-Ionian (spelled as B-Ionian) Whenever the syllable ti turns into fa the tone is lowered by an augmented prime.

    2. The essential latin note names do not change, unless there is enharmonic respelling. NB: Each Mode is spelled with a consistent set of 7 note names. In Version 2 there is a default spelling for each of the 84 modes, which cannot be modified yet by the user.

  1. Now the alteration amount is set to 12, which yields diatonic transposition, and the same pattern is played again: Three fingers touch scale degrees 3, 5, and 8. With every diatonic transposition not only all three audible tone syllables change, but also the notes (and audible pitches). They descend stepwise. If you watch the seven note names on the playground, you will discover that they are only rotated. None of seven note names is being altered.

  2. In preparation of tutorial 4a an elaboration is being introduced. Yust follow the instructions in the video and practice!
