Sound Banks

Since 2015 the TimGM6mb.sf sound font is bundled with our apps.

The full version of SolFa Mode-Go-Round and some of the Musk Apps support playing arbitrary instrumental sounds.

Therefore, you can download a sound bank file in SoundFont 2, DLS or EXS format (extensions .sf2, .dls, .exs or .zip archives containing such files). The file formats sfArk and sfPack are not supported.

If you have a Mac or Windows computer, you might use its system DLS file. See Roni Music's instructions. (Not sure, if this is legal for end users.)

Mac: /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/gs_instruments.dls

Win: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\win_gm.dls

To copy the Mac DLS file to iCloud, so that you can use it in MIDI SolFa Mode-Go-Round and the Musk Apps, open Terminal, paste the following line and press <return>.

cp /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.component/Contents/Resources/gs_instruments.dls ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents/5WK8MLWS24~de~webli~garbers~SolFa-Mode-Go-Round/Documents/

You can find many free sound banks on the web especially in SoundFont format (Google, see also custom search engines in Resources).

They can be multiple 100 MB in size, so don't download while on the go.

We found that larger ones raise problems on an iOS device.

TimGM6mb.sf (6MB) works quite well. You can find it on the following site: Tim Brechbill.

To install a sound bank, open Safari on the iOS device and click the sound bank link.

Depending on the size of the sound font and your internet connection speed, the download may take a while.

When finished downloading, you are given the option to "Open in SolFa Mode-Go-Round", "Open in Musk MIDI Player" or "Open in Musk MIDI Keyboard".

This will save the sound bank in the Inbox folder of the chosen app.

Now switch to SolFa Mode-Go-Round, double tap the sound bank or open the Channel Mixer and set a MIDI channel to use a sound from that sound bank.

In the MIDI-Out settings choose the MIDI channel number to use.
