If you have a question, you may want to check out the section below first. Here are some of the more commonly asked questions about Shop classes at SMHS:
Is there welding offered?
No, we don't have the proper ventilation or space currently.
Do you work on cars?
No unfortunately, for the same reason we don't offer welding. However, we do discuss how car engines operate on similar principles to the single cylinder, 4 stroke engine we work on in Mechanical Home Maintenance.
Can I use the shop to build my own project outside of class hours?
Absolutely, we highly encourage it! The only catch is students must be currently enrolled or have completed a Shop course prior to using shop tools and equipment and have an instructor present while working.
Do I have to pay for material to make projects?
Not for any projects that are made in a class. If you wish to make a project on time outside of class, most of the material will have to be provided by the student. The shop may be able to donate some materials, but you will have to see Mr. Thalheimer or Mr. Olver first.
If I have completed Structural Home Maintenance, can I take Construction 20 or 30?
Possibly, depending on the circumstance. These classes do offer some similar skills to students, but there is knowledge and skills that must be acquired in Construction 10 before taking Construction 20 or 30. Some of these skills are not offered in Structural Home Maintenance.
Do you do 3D printing?
Not currently, but we are hoping to acquire one in the near future.
Can we keep the projects we make?
Any portable project made can be taken home!
