The faculty members of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) got a chance to learn about the latest development in national research from two of the renowned scientists in the country during the CAS Interdisciplinary Research and Extension (R&E) Writeshop, held at the CAM auditorium on Oct. 25-26, 2018.

Dr. Gregorio E.H. Del Pilar, Chairperson of the Social Sciences Division of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) and Professor of the Department of Psychology at the University of the Philippines – Diliman, together with Dr. Arvin C. Diesmos, Chairperson of the Biological Sciences Division of NRCP and Scientist III at the National Museum of the Philippines, shared the ongoing trends in the natural and social sciences.
Dr. Del Pilar discussed the harmonized national research and development (R&D) agenda in line with Ambisyon Natin 2040. He presented of the role of NRCP in attaining the R&D agenda. Afterwards, he presented completed and ongoing research projects financed and assisted by NRCP and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Meanwhile, Dr. Diesmos shared his experiences in conducting research in the field of natural sciences. He also presented some of the studies that he completed. Afterwards, he discussed the practical and efficient way of writing and completing research projects.
Ms. Mary Charlotte O. Fresco and Ms. Marisse V. Borillo of the Technical Capacity Development Section of NRCP, conducted an orientation on how to be a member of NRCP as well as the benefits of being an associate and a regular member. Ms. Fresco also shared the number of scientists all over the country who are members of the various division of NRCP.
The lectures of the speakers from NRCP was held on the first day of the writeshop, right after the opening ceremony. The writeshop aims to produce research and extension proposals, which could be developed as institutional projects.
Dr. Mari Jane A. Lee, the dean of CAS, expressed her support to the CAS Research Council for its dedication to keeping the good research culture in the college. Likewise, she expressed her gratitude to the guest speakers from NRCP for sharing their knowledge on research to the CAS faculty members.
On the second day of the writeshop, the faculty members of each discipline developed their own research and extension proposals, which they presented thereafter. Dr. Gondelina Radovan, Vice-President for Planning, Research, Extension, Production and Development (PREPD) together with Dr. Editha De Jesus, Director of Research Services, and Prof. Malou Enal, served as panel of evaluators.

As part of the writeshop, Prof. Essex Vladimier Samaniego presented his completed research entitled “Diet and Distribution of Invasive Alien Species of Frogs in Mount Banahaw San Cristobal Protected Landscape.”
The CAS Interdisciplinary R&E Writeshop was made possible through the initiative of Prof. Rene P. Zubieto, CAS R&E coordinator and the CAS Research Council in cooperation with SLSU Gender and Development Office.
