Refocusing Teaching and Learning in the New Normal

Abstract

One of the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic is that it has blurred the lines between professional and personal life as social interactions have been limited to contain spread of the coronavirus. This is greatly felt in the context of education where the notion of face to face classes, interaction and mass gatherings which are staples in schools become problematic.

In this virtual forum, I argue that teaching in the new normal requires re-examining the teaching-learning process from a systems approach considering the work from home perspective. Anchored on core principles of engagement, transparency and accountability, I map out specific practices from the macro-micro level to help educators plan implementing their own institutional programs in light of their unique contexts in these extraordinary times.

About the speaker:

Paolo Nino Valdez holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Philippine Normal University and his dissertation which delves on culture and code switching was a finalist for the Christopher Brumfit Outstanding Dissertation Award in 2008. He is currently an Associate Professor and research fellow of the Department of English and Applied Linguistics, De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines. In 2017, he was a visiting scholar in the English language and literature group of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Aside from Paper Presentations in Local and International Conferences, his publications have appeared in Discourse, Context and Media, Asia Pacific Education Researcher, Journal of AsiaTEFL, Malaysian Journal of Learning and Instruction, and Reflective practice. His research interests are in the areas of linguistic landscapes, teacher beliefs, critical pedagogy and contemporary sociolinguistics.
