ARTE monitor - basic data

BASIC DATA - Skagway Arctic Tern colony monitoring project

The following information is available for download in an easy to print PDF file

Open or create your eBird account. The Alaska eBird portal is http://ebird.org/content/ak/

Data can also be entered through the eBird mobile app - see their web site for more information

1) – click on the “Submit Observations” tab

2) – Where did you bird?

select the hotspot “Skagway – arctic tern colony”

This hotspot is on the west side of the road, roughly across from the fire hydrant.

    • the first time you enter data, use the “find it on a Map” option

    • after that, you'll see the hotspot under “Choose from Your Locations”

3) – Date and Effort screen

enter the date

select “Stationary” for Observation Type

You do not need to be at the exact spot shown on the eBird map. While making observations, you can move approximately 30 meters (30 yards) around the area of the hotspot.

enter Start Time, Duration, and Party Size

you may add general comments here, but please put any ARTE info in species screen.

This comment field defaults to private, it will not be viewable to others unless you make it public.

4) – What did you see or hear? screen

scroll to “Arctic Tern”, or use the “Jump to Species...” search option.

If you are the first person to observe an ARTE this season, you may be asked to add it to the list.

select “no” at the complete checklist question (unless you recorded all other species)

optional:

enter any additional information for ARTE (see expanded data)

optional:

enter observations for other species

5) – You are done – thank you for your contribution!

NOTE: if you visit the hotspot to look for ARTE, but find none and wish to record that, you have two options:

a) record all the other species you see and make a “complete checklist” entry in eBird. If you do not wish to count the number of individuals for other species, eBird allows you to enter an “X” to indicate presence without counting.

b) write down the information and send in an email to SBC@aptalaska.net
