There are three ways to participate in the Skagway Christmas Bird Count:
Field Observers (routes): people who follow a daytime designated route (see descriptions below). Our routes are covered by vehicle, by walking a trail/pathway, or by canvassing an area by boat. Some routes combine more than one transportation method. Most routes are covered by a group of birders, but some more experienced individuals may cover a route solo. Beginning birders will be placed with a group of more experienced birders.
Feeder Watchers: people who watch a feeder for a minimum of 15 minutes sometime during the count day. The feeder may be your own, or you can volunteer to watch someone else's feeder.
Owling: people who go out before dawn or after dusk to listen for owls. No designated routes.
Post-count meet up at the old Russo house (mile 1.0 Dyea Road) starting at dusk, to whenever. Hot spiced beverages, alcoholic and non, provided; snacks welcome. Come warm up, and bring your stories to share! and can drop off data sheets, too.
Click here for data sheets and more information about recording your observations.
To sign up for a route, feeder or owling: post to our forum, or email us at sbc@aptalaska.net
