The Great Escape

from

Stalag Luft III, 24th March 1944

On 24th March, 1944, 76 prisoners of war escaped from Stalag Luft III, 3 made it home, of the 73 re-captured 50 were shot on Hitler’s orders..[v]

'An extraordinary claim that Allied prisoners of war involved in the Great Escape were betrayed by two of their own side has come to light in files at The National Archives, 2024. As recorded in a record held by The National Archives,  Flt Lt Desmond Plunkett (see below) told British authorities when he was released from the camp in May 1945: “There are two individuals… whose activities have a direct bearing on the fate of the 50 executed prisoners of war.'   link

Stalag Luft III, a German prisoner of war camp, was situated in Sagan, 100 miles south-east of Berlin, now called Zagan, in Upper Silesia, Poland
