Master's Thesis Supervision / 修論指導について

修論指導を希望する修士１年生は、研究科が定めるガイダンス期間中に野田に連絡し、30分の面談のアポイントメントを取ってください。面談の実施は修論指導を行う必要条件とします。


Currently, I do not have much experience in advising master's students, but I have conducted joint research with Kyohei Okumura, who was enrolled in the master's course at the University of Tokyo at the time of writing, on "An Economic Analysis of Difficulty Adjustment Algorithms in Proof-of-Work Blockchain Systems" (accepted for EC 2020). My master's thesis advising will be based on this experience. I would like to proceed your master's thesis project as a joint work between you and me. My advising will be more like the "lab-style" of the natural-science fields, rather than the "independent and no-intervention style" often seen in the economics field. I will give a lot of instructions and even share tasks in some cases. While it depends on how each individual project proceeds, I will be a co-author of your master's-thesis project paper when it is submitted to a journal or conference. In addition, you need to approve that I will decide how we proceed with the project further if you become unable to spend time on the project (e.g., because you get a non-academic job).

現状、私には修士学生の指導経験はあまりありませんが、執筆当時、東京大学の修士課程に在籍していた奥村恭平君と "An Economic Analysis of Difficulty Adjustment Algorithms in Proof-of-Work Blockchain Systems" （EC 2020 に採択）について共同研究を行った経験があります。私の修論指導は、このときの経験をベースとした「学生と共同研究をする」という形で行う予定です。経済学界の修論指導で多々見られる自由放任スタイルよりも、理系の研究室のような進め方をイメージしてください。かなり指示を出しますし、場合によっては（例えば再構成・添削のような）作業の分担も行います。個別のプロジェクトの進み方にもよりますが、論文投稿時には私との共同研究という扱いになる可能性があること、その場合、学生が就職する等して改訂に時間を取れなくなった場合は、その後のプロジェクトの継続の仕方については私の裁量で判断することを承知していただきます。


  • The topics I am able to teach are limited to theoretical analyses of market/mechanism design and Econ/CS.

  • I cannot teach behavioral economics, decision theory, and network economics.

  • Although I have some knowledge of implementation theory, information design, repeated games, and stable matching, UTokyo has faculty members who are more familiar with these topics.

  • I can guide you in writing an economics paper on cryptocurrency. However, I am not familiar with finance theory.

  • I have experience in writing papers related to political science, macroeconomics, and empirical IO, but I could not have written these papers without the help of a co-author. I alone do not have a comprehensive knowledge of the techniques and literature in these fields and cannot provide guidance. In particular, I cannot instruct you on how to proceed with empirical analysis.

  • It would be wonderful if students use techniques that go beyond the areas that I cover. I also encourage students to ask questions of other instructors and students about techniques for which I am unable to provide guidance.

  • 私が指導可能なトピックは、マーケット/メカニズム・デザインとEcon/CSの理論的な分析に限られます。

  • ミクロ経済学に関するトピックでも、行動経済学・意思決定理論・ネットワークの経済学などに関しては、指導する能力をまったく持ちません。

  • 遂行理論・情報デザイン・繰り返しゲーム・安定マッチングなどは、私もある程度の知識はあるものの、東京大学によりこれらのトピックに詳しい教員がいます。

  • 仮想通貨に関する経済学の論文執筆は指導可能です。ただし、私はファイナンス・金融工学に関する知識はまったくないので、それらの側面に興味がある方へ指導を行うことはできません。

  • 私は政治学・マクロ経済学・実証産業組織論などに関係する論文の執筆経験はありますが、これらの論文は共著者の助けなくして執筆することはできませんでした。私単独ではこれらの分野の技術や文献を知識として網羅できておらず、指導することはできません。特に実証分析の進め方を指導することはできない点には注意してください。

  • 実力のある学生が私がカバーする領域を超えた技術を使い、研究を進めるのは素晴らしいことだと思いますし、強く歓迎します。また、私が指導できない技術に関して、他の教官や学生に質問をすることも推奨します。


Depending on the number and composition of the students who have asked me to supervise their master's thesis, I may have to decline to supervise some of them.

修論指導を依頼してきた方々の人数・構成によっては、やむを得ず何人かの指導をお断りする場合があります。
