Why practice karate?
Many people take up karate for exercise & self defense. However there are many other benefits that can be derived from learning karate, by people of all ages and genders. Some of these are:
• Improved health and fitness
• Increased awareness
• A practical method of self defense
• Deeper mental awareness and a higher level of self control
• A strong social aspect where many friendships are made
How long does it take to become good at karate?
It is difficult to put a time factor on how long it takes to become good at karate as everyone has a different potential to learn. We have found from past experience that after six months or so of training most students are well on the way to achieving a good, sound knowledge of self defense, though it will take at least five years to attain a black belt.
What about injuries?
Karate does involve contact, and the occasional bruise in your Martial Arts career is probably unavoidable. The instructors are very aware of the potential for injury and constantly strive to promote technical excellence and self control to reduce the risks. Because of this Karate has one of the lowest injury rates of all “sports”.
I have never taken a martial art. Do you need experience to join?
No experience is necessary to start in karate. Everyone is welcome and students train to their own physical abilities.
What should I wear?
Initially wear something loose and comfortable - sweat pants and a white T-shirt is ideal. If you have any jewelry (rings, watches, necklaces etc.) please remove them before training. You don't need to worry about footwear as no shoes or socks are worn in class. When you want a proper karate Gi (uniform) talk to your Sensei.
Do I need a uniform?
Uniforms are optional unless you wish to grade, in which case you may either borrow a uniform with a Legacy Shorin-Ryu crest (if one is available in your size) or buy the uniform and crest beforehand.
Generally, if you’ve stuck with karate for a few weeks it’s a good idea to get a uniform even if you’re a ways away from grading. Some techniques shown in class require you to grab the other persons clothing and Gi’s are made of a strong material that won’t stretch or rip easily.
I have studied martial arts. Would I keep my rank in your dojo?
Hanshi Legacy honours belts awarded in other martial art styles. You would have to speak with your Sensei about practicing in the dojo. Your basics/kata may be different so adjustments would have to be made accordingly. You may practice your own style or begin learning Legacy Shorin-Ryu karate
Do you have tournaments?
Legacy Shorin-Ryu holds a winter Shiai (tournament) in February, which our students usually attend to support or participate. Our club is often invited to other tournaments in Toronto, Windsor and London area though these are usually announced throughout the year and are not mandatory.
A number of seminars are held throughout the year as well. These seminars focus on a specific topic (fighting/sparing; weapons; tai-chi; ect.) and are sometimes lead by individuals not directly associated with the club. These seminars are not mandatory to attend.
