On this page, I have included two google slides that I used while I was on sabbatical. Please note that phonics instruction is not my area of expertise within the vast discipline of reading instruction. I attended the Orton Gillingham training to learn about approaches to support students with dyslexia and created these google slides to summarize what I learned from the week-long Orton Gillingham workshop for my colleagues.
Orton Gillingham Introduction for Teachers:
I created the first presentation for a small group of System 44 teachers at Sequoia Union High School District to give an overview of what might be helpful for System 44 classes and/or for SIFE (students with interrupted schooling) in ELD classes.
Orton Gillingham Strategies for ELD/ELA 1 Students
I developed the second one when a teacher invited me to model a couple of strategies with her ELD/ELA 1 class. I gauged their response with an informal feedback sheet included on the PowerPoint, and they reported positive reactions to the approach. Of course, in a thirty-minute demonstration, I was not able to ascertain how effective the strategies were.
Even though I modified the activities for high school students, I still felt that they are not age appropriate. Interestingly, from feedback from a small sample size of teachers and students, the students did not seem to find the approaches juvenile. That said, I think we would need to try these with a wider audience to see if they can effectively be used with high school students. The research supporting the use of these strategies to support students with dyslexia appears to be robust.
