As a teacher, I strive to provide engaging, relevant learning experiences that accelerate students’ literacy development and promote autonomy and agency.
I began my teaching career in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1989. My 26 years of teaching include time at both public and independent schools at the elementary, middle, high school and community college levels. Most of my experience has been teaching middle and high school English language development, English and reading in public school settings.
I completed my undergraduate degree at Princeton University in English. My post-graduate studies include a year of study at the Universidad Nacional de Bogotá in literary theory and Latin American literature, a Masters in Spanish from University of California Santa Barbara, a semester-long fellowship at University of California Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education, and, most recently, a Masters in Teaching Reading with a TESOL certificate from University of San Francisco.
I am grateful to my many mentors and teachers. Many of my best teachers have been my creative, hard-working, insightful students, as well as my inspiring and collaborative colleagues. A life-long learner, I embrace a growth mindset for myself and my students.
In my free time, I enjoy being with family and friends, learning, reading to and with my children, traveling, volunteering in my community, hiking and being near and in water.
