Sean's London Photos: Summer 2007
Comically small European cars
Here's the funny thing: In the photo below I'm messing around and standing in front of a theater poster, but there's no optical illusion with the car in the photo above . . . I'm standing right beside it and it really is a teeny little clown car! (In case you're wondering, yes, I specifically told the cadets that they were NOT allowed to pick up, tip over, or otherwise manhandle any small vehicles while we were in the U.K. )
Broad Walk in Kensington Gardens
(the way I walk to/from work if I don't feel like taking the Tube)
Bagpiper in downtown Edinburgh, Scotland
Random impressive building (a hotel, I think) in Edinburgh
Arthur's Seat (the name of the mountain), Edinburgh
Another view of Arthur's Seat
Scottish Parliament Building: Surprisingly modern, surprisingly fugly
Overlooking Edinburgh with Arthur's Seat in the background
A lot of Edinburgh actually looks older than a lot of London
(I think because London was bombed so heavily in WWII)
Edinburgh Castle overlooking a downtown park
The Tube (a.k.a. the London Underground) is almost never this empty. Public transportation in England rocks (especially because a Tube pass is part of our program, so we ride all over London free)!
Aerial view of Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park
(about two blocks from where I was living in London)
The English countryside is BEAUTIFUL! This is a field outside Colchester (a pretty little English village that's about an hour from London by train). I'm laughing because there was a little dog running around spastically in the wildflowers as we were all taking pictures.
Cadets are excited about visiting the Guinness Brewery in Dublin
The brewery is the #1 tourist attraction in the entire country of Ireland (no joke)
After the tour, you get a free pint of Guinness in a rooftop bar w/a 360-degree view of Dublin
If you are a college student, this is very exciting
(Note: The girls with long hair aren't cadets)
Kilmainham Jail in Dublin
(Note: This was part of a tour . . . no cadets were imprisoned here)
Me with my Aussie/Brit buddy Rachel in Oxford
(where she and her girlfriend/partner Jen work and live . . .
though the building behind us isn't their house)
Big Ben and Parliament from the air (photo taken from a huge ferris wheel on the other side of the Thames River)
Oxford University: rarely mistaken for The Citadel (or vice versa)
Case in point: In grad school my friend Rachel lived just to the left of this bridge
(part of Hertford College at Oxford University) . . . the new barracks at The Citadel are pretty nice, but somehow it's not quite the same
The rest of the photos on this page are from the 2006 Summer in London Program,
but they're still good for a laugh
Art appreciation, smirky cadet style
Four cadets on top of the highest mountain in the Lake District of England . . . note the manly poses
Another photo of climbing in the Lake District
Stonehenge . . . whoa . . .
Golf? Sure!
Cliff diving? Why not?
Cadets are happy that they don't have to be in uniform while they're in London . . . unlike this guy
Cadet Dunning stands at attention, but this guy doesn't appear to want her as backup
If there's no gym in the area, that's no problem: sheep chasing is good exercise
Cadets manage to have a good time despite a lack of uniforms, inspections, drill practice, etc.
The courtyard of the British Museum
Big Ben and part of the Parliament building
The changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace
Paris: Only about 2 hours away via a high-speed train that goes under the English Channel
London across the Thames River at night (gotta love the summer because it stays light so late!)
Goodbye London! It's always fun to visit, but Charleston is home now!
