Inventing Camp Scripps / LLAiR

At the 20th Reunion of the Scripps Class of '69, classmates hatched plans to make a major gift to Scripps, in the form of an annual program that would honor alumnae creativity and community, bringing alumnae of all generations to reside on campus and to share successes and inquiries stemming from Scripps studies.

Members of the Class of '69 formed a council that advanced the concept over the next 5 years via alumnae communications, planning sessions, and extended exchanges with Scripps officials.  The council, operating as the "Creative Caucus," engendered what became known as Camp Scripps, first held June 23-26, 1994.

Scripps Summer Camp 1994 drew 45 alumnae for the "First Annual Alumnae Retreat," with workshops presented by and for alumnae, restorative/relaxing exercises, story-telling salon sessions, and tales told around evening Campfires.  The Camp closing circle at Margaret Fowler Garden, celebrating the triumph of manifesting the vision, also saw the inauguration of the Lois Langland Alumna in Residence program -- with a dragonfly landing to bless Campers' initial investment (shown at right: Judith Davies, dragonfly, Marga).  Campers adopted the dragonfly as the symbol of Camp, regularly sporting dragonfly-themed garb, jewelry, accessories, and tattoos.

The 1994 Camp brochure lists the originating Creative Caucus:   Susan Ball '69, Regula Feldmann Campbell '69, Alice Betts Carpenter '57, Professor Lois Langland, Pamela Lauesen '66, Susan Dinkle Lindley '67, Kitty Maryatt '66, Leslie Lasher Monsour '69, Marga Rose Hancock '69, Meredith Sabini '66, and Kristin Wiberg '91 -- honored as "Camp Mothers" at Camp XX June 20, 2013.
In June 2013, eleven '69ers attended Camp XX:  Laurie Mitchell Arnold, Valerie Johnson Ball, Mary Breckenridge, Regula, Ellie David, Liebe Gray, Leslie, Marga, Charla Connelley Shadduck, Sue Talbot, & Ann Merrill Westaway -- several in images posted on Camp Scripps Facebook.  Camp moments included conversation/initial scheming re our 45th ReU in 2014, and the golden anniversary ahead .... hmmm?
