January 2013: Members Choice

Gas Station Disco, Another Side, Gleasons Drift, Poptart Monkeys, Just Say Yes, Roxy Moron, Tedd Hazard, Condition Oakland...

This month, to start off the new year, we wanted to do something a little different. The Schuylkill Musicians Group has Featured some great artists over the last year or so and We wanted to share some of our favorite bands. I wrote Feature of the Month since we are not a band even though all of us are artists/musicians.

Some of these bands have been features already and others will most definitely be features in the future.  Each band won’t have the large amount of info our usual features would, We don’t want to have too much on bands that haven’t been featured yet. A friend once said to me that "the Schuylkill Musicians Group is kind of like Batman, no one really knows who you are but people know you're doing good." Well now people can see who the Justice League goes out to see when they can.

Our member Zack Chose Gas Station Disco, Who our newest member Mike wrote about in his monthly column, We couldn’t get much info on the guys outside of their pages. But, Gas Station Disco is made up of former PTM Drummer Rob Hampton,  Jonathan "Bug" Price - Bass/Vocals, Jason Dumm - Lead Vocals/Guitars, and Newest member Mike Reed - Lead Guitar/Vocals. The band’s FB page says “GSD is a premier Rock band From Pennsylvania. In the short time since its formation, Gas Station Disco has rocketed to the forefront of the local scene, accelerated by its high-energy performances. The band delivers a sing-out-loud brand of rock music intended to captivate the crowd and keep them partying all night long.” Late last year the guys filmed a music video for their single “Dance Floor”. The guys will be in Skook at the Station house in llewelly, Friday 1/18. And a few shows outside the area over the new few weeks. The guys tour so much and so far that we won’t see them around here again until March 23rd when they return to Striker’s Pub in Pottsville.

Our next pick came from our member Jess. I had a feeling she was a little bias when she chose her favorite Another Side.
Jess wrote,

"Another Side is an amazing mix of musicians you may recognize from other bands that played over the years. Those former bands include The Other Side, Locomotion, Neon Blonde and Section 8. With a mixture of Oldies hits and classic rock Renee Gubala and Bill Lindenmuth will sing their way into your hearts while JimmySiemanis (bass), Frank Blozusky (drums) and Jim Juranis (guitar) are sure to get you up out of your seats onto the dancefloor. This awesome band can be found anywhere from a local bar, block party, wedding or even a parade float. They even have a cd of cover songs called Cover Story so you can take Another Side wherever you want. I don't know what you people are waiting for, go and check them out. You will not be disappointed!”

You can check A.S. this Saturday at Goodwill Fire Co. in Cressona for the Beckville Gun Club Roast (contact them about tickets).  And Be sure to check their page for all the upcoming info on one of the hardest working bands in the area.

Our own resident Sick Girl lassie, Michelle loves Gleasons Drift. Currently working on their new album due out in a few months but will be out to support the new album live in the area then. G.D. “Formed in 2002 with Bill Whalen  Guitar/Vocals, John Lipzok Guitar/Vocals, Tim Jenkins Drums, and Tom Doorly Bass/Vocals. They spent their first 3 years playing blockshoots, bars and fire halls while writing the songs which would eventually become their 2005 CD “Beaver”, a rough and tumble collection of ten tunes steeped in barroom swagger. “Beaver” defined Gleasons Drift live sound; loose, lean, spontaneous and genuine. This LIVE sound was captured in the 2006 LIVE DVD, “Gleasons Drift and Friends”, a collection of songs recorded at several stops on the 2005 tour. 2007 saw the release of the band’s second full-length “Nickel Rocket”. Nickel Rocket captures the sound that the band has honed live on the road; tight changes, smart melodies, and lyrics that tell the story of the human condition, all the while extending the tradition of American Rock and Roll. In 2010, the band released “Blythe Township Mellencamp”, which triumphed in blending genres, styles and traditions, creating something new, yet still managing to surprise. The band is currently in the tracking/mixing phase of a new album due out June 2013 with a summer tour to follow.” Be sure to like Gleasons Drift at www.facebook.com/gleasonsdrift to stay up to date with all tour happenings. Also check out our website www.gleasonsdrift.com as well as the Blind Pigeon Records website www.blindpigeonrecords.com for music, videos, merch and other fun stuff.

I figured I would have this next problem come up.

Our member Jenn might not get to see her favorite local band anymore but had to pick her first love and our very first feature ever the phenomenal Poptart Monkeys! Be sure to check out our feature on the guys under “Notes”.  Today you can still get that same PTM energy in the bands that have the pleasure of having former members such as Alison Standby, Avenging Autumn, & Gas Station Disco. For a little update on the other guys, Bill is still in Berwick not currently playing with anyone as far as we know. Tyson is no longer with the Current line up of the PTM (we have NO idea if the PTM still exist in FL), After leaving the PTM, James spent time with Childhood friend Sean in Shoot the Moon and Red Orange Aura. He has since fallen off the grid a little though but was seen playing with friends at the Tamaqua Community Center’s Open Stage night last year. As for Chris, he Chris: lives in Bloomington, Indiana. He was a founder of The Mediatwist Group (talent/marketing firm) in 2000, Co-Founder of Bubbles for kids, a non-profit specializing in Celebrity mentorship programs for Challenged kids. And Feld Entertainment as a Production manager. He does a LOT of work promoting and managing “Drummer vs Emulator” out of Jacksonville, FL. Even though the PTMare gone you never know what tomorrow will bring. Poptartmonkey.com is still up and covers the original line up.

Member Anne chose a relatively new band to the area, well sort of new, and taking the area by STORM. The guys of Just Say Yes seem to be all over the area and came fast. Made up of Joe Whalen - bass and vocals, Kevin Palmer - guitar and vocals, and Paul Ringer – drums. Just Say Yes is a seriously high energy 80's-esque rock trio that blasts you in the face with a raw, no-holds-barred sound that makes the crowd move whether they want to or not.

“The reason for the new name came from bookings were few and far between. We wanted bar owners to "Just Say Yes"From the first crack of the snare drum to the last lonely hum of the amplifiers, they understood what makes the band unique. Not only are they a trio that can rock the house with equipment that most bands would have thrown out, they make that equipment sound like thousands of dollars were spent on it. JSY are also really good friends.

“How many bands spend Christmas together? We did. We find that to be what makes a good local band.”

So if you happen to see Just Say Yes playing in Schuylkill County, "Just Say Yes!" It’s hard to NOT see JSY play, they’re all over.

Check them out Friday 1/18 at McNiff’s in Mahanoy City and Blue Mountain Pub in Palmerton on the 25th.

I wasn’t sure who our boy Tom would pick after his Band “Ricky and the Ricardo’s” were our feature last year? Tom listens to a lot of different eras of music. With his history though I couldn’t have been surprised when he picked Roxy Moron. The group From Cumbola and Sch. Haven areas, Roxy Moron is a 3 piece high energy unplugged experience that takes an electric approach to music using acoustic instruments. The band consists of Scott Webb (acoustic guitar, vocals), Matt Stone (acoustic guitar, vocals), and Steve Geary (drums, vocals). They cover music from the 70’s all the way through to modern day. Scott, Matt and Steve are no strangers to the stage. Scott & Matt played together for many years in (Tolerance, Plug, & with Tom in Buck 2 Eighty) Steve Geary played drums for Throttle 5. Roxy Moron started as a 3 piece acoustic show that was thrown together in 3 weeks for a 2008 NYE party. The intentions were clear, dig through the archives and pull out as many songs as possible and put on a show for family and friends. After NYE they decided to take the show on the road to see where it goes. After 4 years of playing local bars in Schuylkill and Berks County Roxy Moron is still going strong. In addition to Roxy Moron, Scott & Matt on occasions play “acoustic only” shows at select locations, including 1/26 at the Wooden Keg Pottsville. Keep a close eye on their Facebook page "Roxy Moron Unplugged" as well as their Facebook band page "Roxy Moron" for upcoming shows and additional information.

Every Super Hero group needs Twins and we gotem, Kailey and Kelsey picked two great music acts from the area.

Kelsey chose Tedd Hazzard from Hazleton. “He plays a unique blend of folk/punk music as a solo artist. Plays around the area and has had a couple small tours on the east coast. He possesses the talent to play guitar and harmonica which you don’t see to often today. You can hear the influences of NOFX and a majority of punk music. He's really cool give him a listen.”

You can check out Tedd at https://www.facebook.com/teddhazardandthe40ozth

Like the stereo type of twins Kailey went the other direction and picked the Ashland based trio, Condition Oakland. “Condition Oakland is an awesome folk-punk band. C.O. is made up of Tyler: Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals, Dan: Bass, & Billy: Drums. They have a fantastic sound and always seem to play a great set. They have a few noticeable inspirations to their music such as Frank Turner and Alkaline Trio. They are defiantly worth more than a listen, Check them out on Facebook or YouTube:

Finally the lazy bastard that started all this insanity a few years back, Kenny…(Me) I hate talking in the third person so…

I’ve been in bands longer than I've not been, I have tons of friends in bands all over the area so there is no way I could pick one band, It would be like picking my favorite junk food. Whenever I get the rare opportunity to get out though, these are the bands that are on my list. (Cheap plugs) The PTM’s were and will always be my favorite for many reasons both personal and professional. But also Gas Station Disco, Guilty by Choice, YMI, Emily’s Toybox, Seven Theory, Rock Street Park, Ricky and the Ricardo’s, Roxy Moron, Sterling Koch. That was just off the top of my head so I’m sure I missed some.

We put our features through the “fun” task of answering our questions that we STOLE from Inside the Actor’s Studio with James Lipton and the old Biography pages of the Band the O-Zone Babies. (Not all the members took part and I took some answers out to save space).

February 2013: The Collins Bunch!

This month we have something VERY special that wouldn't be possible in most area music Scenes. In the music industry there are the Van Halen brothers, the Gallagher brothers of Oasis, the Young’s of AC/DC, & the Hale’s of Hale Storm. It’s not too unusual to find family members in bands together so why would Skook be any different?

Since the 1960’s there has been a name that has become synonymous with Schuylkill County Music and that is why we are ecstatic to bring you the colorful story of a family’s comings and goings in the wonderful world of the music industry. From the very lips of their Patriarch, We bring to you the reflection and recollections of our Featured Artist/Band for February 2013. Not one, not two, Heck not even three but the entire, incredible COLLINS BUNCH… A musical, magical family affair!

“As they say “the apple doesn’t fall from the tree”, and those words best describe Pottsville’s Eddie Collins, veteran musician, radio personality and music historian, and the legacy he’s transcended over the years thru his children, daughter Karrie, and sons Keith, Chris, and Eddie III, who are some of the most respected musicians in Northeast Pennsylvania. Their talents, experiences, and accomplishments are many, and you’ll enjoy reading their incredible journey. So. grab yourself  a Coke (make it a super-size). Or, maybe have a coffee (better yet, brew a pot!) … now read on, and rock on with THE COLLINS BUNCH !

Introducing Eddie Collins

Eddie’s musical journey began in Philadelphia, the year 1962. At the age of five, he was ushered into Sound Plus Recording Studios by his uncle Fr. Jim Drucker, a booking agent / disc jockey / music publisher, requesting Eddie to provide a spoken intro to a song called “The Day Rock & Roll Dies.” Armed with a group of studio musicians, and backup singers “The Ly- Dells” (…known for their 1961 hit “Wizard Of Love”). Eddie found himself immersed into the world of rock music. Also, during this period he was under consideration to audition for a role as the son of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, in the 20thCentury Fox release of “Cleopatra.” Unfortunately, Eddie didn’t get to shine on the silver screen!

During 1965, he developed an interest playing the cornet, then saxophone, until a family move to Hazleton Pa. in 1966, sparked his interest with the drums. At age thirteen in 1970, Eddie was performing on Saturday nights with a variety trio, The Key 3, and also as a percussionist with the Hazleton Philharmonic Orchestra. The year 1972 would bring the formation of his first rock band Tammany Hall, and for the next two years played high school dances and area night clubs. After a relocation to Pottsville, from 1975 –1977 Eddie led the groupJet, then a stint with the ever popular Sheriff Jones.

In February 1978, Eddie received a phone call from veteran songwriter/producer Billy Carl,(Lesley Gore,1910 Fruitgum Co., Jay & Americans ) asking Eddie to recruit a backup band to go on tour with Danny and The Juniors(of “At The Hop” fame.) After meeting with Carl, and Joe Terry of the act, rehearsals were begun, but the deal fell thru. Months later, Frank Zangari, keyboardist for The Orlons, had forwarded Eddie’s materials to Philadelphia theatrical agent, Norman Joyce, of The Jolly Joyce Agency, offering Eddie a slot as drummer and musical director for an upcoming tour with The Drifters (..hit records “Under The Boardwalk,” “On Broadway,” “Up On The Roof” etc.)

Eddie took the gig, a fourteen state tour of the U.S., which included an appearance on ABC TV affiliate KMBC in Kansas City, Missouri, performing for cast members of the show “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman”. While on this tour, Eddie’s talents caught the eye of Hal James, founding member of The Sanford Townsend Band, known for their 1976 hit “Smoke From A Distant Fire.” James, was in the process of reforming the Warner Bros. recording act, and wanted Eddie to join forces and relocate to Dearborn, Michigan. Eddie considered the opportunity, but due to conflicting schedules of band members, and contractual ties, the project was aborted.

Following his touring with The Drifters, in early 1979 Eddie joined the oldies revival act The Mudflaps, and worked as fill-in drummer for the Florida based Ricky & The Rockets, who were produced by Tony Camilo, and being signed by Electra Records. As the year wound down, Eddie was called upon to provide the backbeat for a seven piece horn band Midnite Sensation, touring the midwest, and and performing for the Hilton and Marriott hotel chains.

In 1980, during a performance in Lenox, Massachusetts with the group Magic Machine, Eddie was spotted by associates of Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, who were talent scouting, and approached him in auditioning for The Joe Perry Project, unfortunately it didn’t materialize. but, as Eddie says ”that’s rock and roll “  By 1981 he decided to pack his suitcases, returning home to spending more time with his wife Debbie and children. Eddie continued to perform regionally in Pennsylvania from 1981 thru 1983 with top forty bands Ryze, Ruff Boy, and a return to The Mudflaps, before trading his drumsticks for a microphone!

The realm of radio broadcasting was Eddie’s next venture, and in June 1983 “Mr. Ed” began to ride the airwaves, as on-air personality and music director for WLSH AM-Lansford PA. WXPX AM / WQEQ FM- Hazleton PA., WARM AM / WMGS FM- Wilkes-Barre PA., WHLM AM / FM- Bloomsburg PA., WMIM AM /WSPI FM- Shamokin PA., and WMGH FM- Tamaqua PA., a station “Mr. Ed” would return as host & producer of “Saturday Night at The Oldies” from March 2000 – November 2002. During his tenure in radio, Eddie was instrumental in promoting, and introducing regional artists to national record labels. He has been acknowledged for his efforts on album releases by Dirty Looks (Atlantic Records), Synch (Columbia Records) and Harpo (Atlas Records).

After a brief return to the stage in 1987 drumming with the group Roundabout, Eddie made his comeback in 1991, as lead vocalist / bass guitarist for The Rocket 88’s, and was producer of their albums “Echoes Of An Era” and “Millennium Memories.” The act appeared in concert with Jay & The Techniques, The Coasters, and Bill Haley’s Comets. From 2005-2010, Eddie performed as vocalist with a nine piece retrospective tribute act The Golden Age Of Rock & Roll Road Show. Other ventures included playing bass guitar and handling vocals for an acoustic trio The Fat Cats, drumming for spinoff blues group The Mojo Dogs, and entertaining with wife Debbie, and mobile disc jockey system as Mr.Ed’s Jukebox Heroes.

An ardent musicologist, Eddie has provided a wealth of information to various authors, and industry leaders, from his personal archives, of over 25,000 45 rpm records, an impressive collection of LPs, 78’s, and rock and roll memorabilia. He compiled the discography for “The Jordan Brothers,” a book written by Maxim W. Furek, also a contributor to Mike Kuzmin’s “Sounds From The Woods”, and television documentary of “The Buoys” by John Chintala aired on FOX TV affiliate WOLF TV.  Eddie has been privileged to have interviewed, emceed, and performed with many of rock and roll’s iconic artists , such as Ray Charles, The Angels, Tommy James, Pete Best of The Beatles , The Shangri-Las, Chubby Checker,… only naming a few from his extensive credit list of legendary celebrities.

Currently, Eddie is the Vice President and Staff Writer for Keystone Record Collectors of Lancaster Pa. He also serves on the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Museum Of Music & Broadcast History, Harrisburg Pa., and is a member of the Broadcast Pioneers Of Philadelphia.

Introducing Karrie Collins (Now Grimes)

Who says girls can’t rock?… seeing and meeting Karrie Collins will put those words back in your mouth!

She has the distinction of not only being the foremost female drummer in Schuylkill County, but having a reputation of the heaviest hands and feet you will hear!

Following the lead of her dad Eddie, and brother Keith, in was inevitable that Karrie would pick up a pair of drumsticks, and in 1990 at age 12, she began her love affair with drums, as pictures of flashy kits & Rush’s Neil Peart adorned her bedroom walls. Being a working girl with a newspaper route, she soon plunked her weekly earnings on a used Tama Rockstar kit at the nearby Terrace Music Store.

In 1993, Karrie began kicking out the backbeat for her first band Branded Planet with bassist Jim Heller of Pine Grove, & guitarist Dave Rohland of Carlisle. Then after graduating from Pottsville’s Nativity BVM High School, she enlisted with Uncle Sam in the U.S. Army. In 1997, Karrie was tapped to join the all female act Boo Boo Kitty. The group was an immediate hit on the club circuit, and was invited as support act for The Badlees, Back in Black, and The Armadillos.

Next, came joining forces with classic rockers Onionhead, Then in 2000, as her brother Keith vacated his drumming seat in The Rocket 88’s,Karrie sat right down for the next five years, enjoying much success with her father Eddie, and high profile gigs with The Coasters, Bill Haley’s Comets, and other legendary artists. During 2005, the Hazleton based Better Than Monday, needing a full time drummer, being impressed with Karrie’s talents, but knowing her demanding schedule, decided to utilize her... and when not available, hire a fill-in… her brother Keith!

Not one to sit still, in 2006 Karrie was invited join the ranks of John Donovan’s project Copper Seven, and in addition to their live shows, was featured on the CD “Anchor.”’ Later that year, Trick Drum Co., of Chicago was seeking endorsers for their fledging company, and announced that Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee, was being signed as the first national artist to their roster,… and first female artist…Karrie Collins!!

Karrie has had the opportunity to perform for famed drummers Liberty De Vitto of Billy Joel fame, and A.J. Pero of Twisted Sister. She has also worked aside such rock figures as Vixen, Saliva, Quiet Riot, Robin Trower, Jackyl, Filter, Saving Abel, Static X, Government Mule, and more!

Currently, Karrie lays down the grooves with her fiancée bassist Lee Grimes, for the area powerhouseAdrenalyn, and side project Syx. As an aggressive young lady, also works on a free lance basis with an impressive list of former and current artists, including Category 5, Badd Monkee, YMI, Plan B, Octogon Speed Chuck, Johnny K. & Co., Class Act, and others. Karrie describes herself best as “… A chick with sticks,… will travel!

Introducing Keith Collins

Given the footprints set before him from his father Eddie, hearing musical the sounds of a rhythm section fascinated Keith Collins. At age seven in 1983, after closing the family’s attic door to bang away on his dad’s drum kit, his ears became curious for more, and before long he was also playing upright bass, thru lessons with the Hazleton Philharmonic Orchestra. By 1987, Keith was ready to make his debut public performance at Gee Whillaker’s in Frackville Pa, as he sat in on drums with the group Roundabout while backing the lead vocals of his dad! During Keith’s high school days, he spent the early 1990’s playing the local teen dances, and pool parties with the Pottsville based Pyramyx *(With Seven Theory’s Donny Frantz, former Poptart Monkey Chris Kurtz & our Featured Artist from May, 2012 Jason Mitchell). Then in 1994 gained noteriety, during his association with Northeast Pennsylvania’s premier alternative act, Psycho Bettie The group developed an intense following on the regional circuit, and were found opening for such acts as Fuel, Live, and Blue Oyster Cult. Keith recalls their drummer Bobby Ronderelli (ex. Black Sabbath, Dio) paying him the ultimate compliment, as after watching his performance Ronderelli said to him “ Kid…you play from the heart!” In later years, Keith would share the stage with such names as Danny & The Juniors, Jay & The Techniques, Saliva, 12 Stones, Puddle Of Mudd, and Texas In July.

Being a musician who played and understood all styles of music, Keith decided in 1996 to jump aboard the bandwagon with his dad’s oldies revue act, The Rocket 88’s, as he brought to the foreground his talents on bass, guitar, and displayed his vocals as well. During the late 1990’s, Keith also did stints with Neighbor Ed, and Cool Daddy Groove, in addition to  recording with Copper Seven, and country artist REMI, as he became an in-demand session performer.

With the dawn of the new millennium, in 2000 Keith returned to the drummer’s seat of Psycho Bettie after the group’s reformation. Later in 2005, decided to move to the front stage, as a vocalist and guitarist with Hoodwink, and formed the off-shoot duo with Jim Juranis known as The Fat Cats. During this period, the Hazleton based Better Than Monday was in need of a drummer, so they ended up enlisting two… Keith andhis sister Karrie! Moving along, during the next few years, Keith enjoyed kicking out the jams with Badd Monkee and as front man for Short Bus Heroes.

More recently in 2010, Keith received a call from longtime friend Rob Hampton, who informed Keith of a recording act needing a solid drummer with vocal chops, the fit was perfect, and soon Jet City Vega(formerly Manian) with Keith, were laying down tracks for their initial Ep with veteran producer Obie O’Brien, (Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Ray Davies etc.) and high profile shows such as Rockapalooza 2012, with stops in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Ohio. Not sitting still, Keith also performed as the Collins & Edge duo, with Jeremy Edge of renown Imagen Records artists act Candlelight Red.

Over the years Keith has established himself as the ‘go to’ guy in the biz, as numerous

bands frequently call upon his expertise to fill-in on short notice, within diverse musical situations. Some of Keith’s clients as a free-lance agent have included, PopTart Monkeys, Asking Andy, Avenging Autumn,Right Hand Red, Remember When, & Good Time Charlie…. and the beat goes on!

Introducing… Chris Collins

Moving into the next generation of the Collins ‘bunch,’ we meet Chris Collins who rocks out on guitar, bass guitar, and percussion chores. Watching from the sidelines, seeing his dad Eddie, brother Keith and sister Karrie, out there performing, getting all the glory (..and money!) Chris decided at an early age that it was his turn, first armed with drumsticks, but finding that strings were more his things, he soon grabbed an axe and started jammin’!

By the late 1990’s there were a few of Chris’ friends who would frequent the Collins

home for weekly jam sessions. As his dad Eddie Collins recalls ‘there was a lot of noise coming from the cellar, unfortunately… they weren't all playing the same tune!’ Undaunted, Chris kept honing his guitar skills, and also enticed his dad to give him an 86’ Fender musicmaster bass to start groovin on.

In 2005, a window of opportunity came, as brother Keith was departing from Copper Seven and the band decided to keep it a ‘family affair’ with Chris coming aboard on bass guitar. A highlight of his many shows with the band, was opening up for Lynard Skynard at Pottsville’s Goodfellas Warehouse.

During the next year, word of Chris’ talents got out to members of the newly formed   metal core actDefend Your Own, recruiting him in joining the group on guitar. Gaining immediate reaction locally in Pottsville, and regional areas, the band soon recorded its self-titled CD, gaining a loyal following with audiences in the tri-state area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and appearing in concert withThe Misfits. Following on the heels of DYO, Chris was contacted by the band Sh#t List, and asked to perform on a tour in Ohio, and a southern state swing thru Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Florida.

The sights of sunny California came next, as in 2009 Chris relocated to Ventura, then Santa Monica, California, as he concentrated on his main passion, graphic arts. Since returning to Schuylkill County in recent years, Chris has focused on logo design and commercial screen printing. Under the banner of FOG Apparel, he has developed a clientele in having designed logos and printed t-shirts for local and regional musical acts such as Sherry Marchefsky, Jet City Vega, Gas Station Disco, Now The City, Pale Harvest, and others in the corporate sector with ‘Ric’s Service Station,’ ‘Josie’s Place’ and ‘Crocodile Rock,’ naming a few.

Highly influenced by reggae music, and the works of Matisyahu, Passafire, and Bob Marley, Chris Collins continues to write, and record his own material. Currently he is in the process of forming a reggae act to showcase his compositions.

Introducing … Eddie Collins III

Last but not least, is the youngest member of the Collins family, Eddie Collins III. A gifted guitarist, and vocalist who not only possesses talent, but a deep understanding and knowledge of the music industry, way beyond his years.

He received his first guitar, a Fender mini-Stratocaster in 1999 at the age of eight, and has been wailing ever since. A diverse musician, Eddie  plays all styles of music, from rock’s roots of the 1950’s and 1960’s, classic rock of the 70’s & 80’s, to the sounds of today, with a technique and style that covers all bases. In addition, Eddie is also proficient on Bass Guitar, Drums and Keyboards.

Being greatly influenced by his dad Eddie, brothers Keith, Chris, and sister Karrie, He stepped on to a stage for the first time, armed with his BC Rich Warlock guitar, at age 12 in 2004, at a school talent show. Following this, was an appearance at a Kindergarten recital for Karrie’s son Billy. Then that summer, it was off to the big leagues, as Eddie sat in with dad’s band The Rocket 88’s at Knobel’s Amusement Resort playing ‘Johnny B.Goode’ for 1,000 spectators!

In 2005, Eddie joined his first band Access Denied, doing their initial gig at a ALS fundraiser for Darrin Foltin, proprietor of Pottsville’s Foltin’s Music Store (in front of six hundred people..)  Soon Eddie began making quite a name for himself as a young performer and showman at local teen dances with the bands Rise Before Dawn, Embrace The Tide, and As Skies Darken.

Within a few short years Eddie was also making his mark on the local scene as a ‘the fill-in guy’ being recruited as rehearsal guitarist for a reunion of 1960’s Warner Bros. recording act Ognir & The Nite People. It was at a heartfelt memorial concert for John Marshall of Psycho Bettie that placed him as featured on guitar with his sister

Karrie’s band Adrenalyn. At this show, a sixteen year old Eddie, with waist long hair flying, commanded the stage, as many jaws dropped, someone said ‘..who is that kid?’ Eddie’s brother Keith turned and said jokingly,..’’That’s my little brother!”

While finishing up his high school days, in 2009 Eddie and a few local guys evolved into a group that finally combined youth, talent, and showmanship into a extremely marketable package. This act was Now The City! *(one our Finalists in our “Most Popular Band Contest), and by April 2010 were found at Atrium Audio in Lancaster PA, recording the CD released as ‘Expectations.’ As the band developed a huge regional following in Northeast Pennsylvania, they were invited to appear on the Rockapalooza 2011 tour in Jackson, Michigan. Later that year, the group went thru personnel changes and emerged as a short time under the name Marvelous Liars before calling it a day, and disbanding.

Pursuing strong aspirations, and an affinity for the entertainment world, Eddie continues to be in demand as a free-lance artist with regional acts Aaron Charles, Tazin Bender, and in recording and performance with Terror On The Screen, and Ed, Beth & Beyond, plus various family oriented projects. During 2012, Eddie embarked on a tour with Imagen Recording Artists Candelight Red, serving as Monitor Engineer and Guitar Tech, with stops in New England, Florida, Texas, etc, and also performed as fill-in guitarist with Cyanide Sunrise on show dates in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan, on the Rockapalooza ‘Rock For Hunger’ tour.”

The members of the Collins family are always playing somewhere so get out to a show in the area; you never know when one might be on the stage.

We didn't do our Questionnaire this month due to space. We wouldn't want this to look like a NYC phone book.

*A VERY special thanks to Eddie Collins Sr. for helping us with this incredible feature Also for all the great pictures of the family that he provided… and for giving me a month off from writing. ;)

April 2013: Y.M.I. & Y.M.I. Duo

In early 2011 when we started work on the “Amped up for O.J. Benefit” there were many bands and performers that came to mind. There were only 5 spots so the choices had to be perfect for an event such as this. There was one band that was not only perfect but it was actually the first one to pop into my head, a band that I’ve seen all over the area for years, a band that was pure energy and fun. A band that always had that little voice asking Why Am I? People that know them don’t wonder Y? they just know, Y.M.I. is finally our Featured Artist of the month for April 2013.

The band Y.M.I. came from the ashes of the band My Fault, which started in the early 2000’s. From that came the incredible voice of Leighann Burke. She had stumbled into the band while trying to start her own project with the head aches that came with it. Before she could call them though, they called her having noticed her ad as well. This was only a fill in spot though since their current singer was off to have a baby. Her first performance with the band was in March of 2001. It was a hard choice to replace their singer but wth the passion, delivery and performance that Leighann brought to the band it wasn’t hard to see why the “fill in” became permanent.

Joe Molinaro had the opportunity to see the band perform at a local club. He had a very overwhelming gut feeling that someday he would work with this girl; although at the present time he had no intention of pursuing joining “My Fault”. Joe had a small studio setup in his basement and was content writing his own music. At the time, Joe had been in many bands in the past and didn’t want to dive back. His specialty was lead guitar but he was also an excellent drummer. In the meantime, the drummer of My Fault’s work schedule began to conflict with the band and he gave his notice. For the time being, “My Fault” relied on a fill-in drummer (who was also the drummer prior to Leighann’s arrival) until they could find someone without a conflicting schedule. The guitarist of “My Fault” mentioned contacting his friend, Joe, whom he knew could play. Thankfully, Joe decided to join and his first gig with them was almost exactly one year from when Leighann joined the band.

Right from the start it was apparent Joe was the perfect fit. With a personality such as his it is pretty much impossible to NOT have a good time around him. For the follow few year the band grew in many way including music selection and building a real show for people to see. The band also decided they wanted to grow in size adding an additional member and have Joe switch to Guitar and effects (Joe has a pedal that can piano, Synth, and other sounds). This had indirectly caused problems with the original guitarist, the problems were even apparent at shows. The situation was hard for Joe since the guitarist had not only had brought him into the band was a longtime friend of his as well was a friend of the bands bassist.  Eventually a replacement drummer; Joe learned the guitar parts and the two parties parting of ways but not under the best of circumstances.

Joe moving up front and with his style of playing and sounds added something special to the shows. This new drummer was just what the band needed also. The chemistry with this new lineup was magic and the crowds could tell. But like all bands discover at one time or another nothing is perfect for long. Soon after the firing of their former guitarist, each member received a letter in the mail from an attorney representing him; the letter stated that he owned the rights to the name “My Fault”. The band members were at first angered, then disappointed, then left with a feeling of desperation as to what they would do. The members decided to hold a contest that would have the audience rename the band. Name after name was looked at over and over but nothing seemed right for them. Finally, Leighann thought of the play on letters, “Y.M.I.” The other members were leery, but with a deadline looming, they decided it would do. In 2004, “Y.M.I.” was born.

2005 brought changes to some of the members. Leighann had split up with her fiancé and Joe went through a separation later that year. From both of these events they realized they were perfect for each other and became a couple. This same year Leighann had been traveling back and forth to Nashville working on her debut crossover country album “Divided” which was released the next year.

Between 2004 and 2008, Y.M.I. became one of the most successful cover bands in the area. They began working with sound engineer, Dave Longo, who added that something special and a fullness to their already amazing sound. They also worked with sound engineers, Matt Longo and James Longo.

Joe and Leighann realized the potential for an acoustic act and formed the laid back version of Y.M.I., called “Y.M.I. DUO”, in 2006.

Unfortunately, amidst all of their success, the drummer of Y.M.I. began to take on his own transformation and showed little interest during his on stage performance; internal issues were once again developing but the others weren’t ready to look for a new drummer. However, at a club in Shenandoah, the members of Y.M.I. met and watched a 25 year old drummer named Tommy Flamini. With his impressive drum accents and on-stage smile from ear-to-ear, they immediately knew that he was what they were looking for to keep the energy alive. Although they were saddened to cut ties with their drummer of four years, the members hired Tommy Flamini in 2008.

In the Summer of 09’ it seemed that Y.M.I.’s 9 year journey maybe be done with when Joe and Leighann had ended their relationship. Joe gave notice to the band and what was almost their final shows was in August.

The 4 of them realize what a great thing they had. Leighann had joined a band a short time after the split but was unhappy. Joe started a new project but found musicians that wanted the same thing hard to find. Tommy took little time off and joined another band a short time later and their bass player just wanted Y.M.I. back, but started looking for a new project none the less.

Only a few months after their split Joe and Leighann found their way back to one another and in a strange turn of events Joe ended up getting hired as the drummer of Leighann’s new band. (I see a pattern here) Soon after the band dissolved Y.M.I. was reformed with former members from their earlier days. All of their fans were still there and ready for new shows. The power couple of Joe and Leighann didn’t want to play as much as they had in previous years with the full band. The Duo project had become popular and they wanted to pursue that option. This caused problems with the other two members and once again problems surfaced. In early 2011, Joe and Leighann cut their bassist and drummer due to the issues with how often they wanted to play with the full band. A short time after the split with the former members auditions for a new bassist and drummer (which I took part in) a number of people we used here and there for try outs and finally in the summer of 2012 the current lineup was set with previous drummer Tommy and new bassist, Walker Loveland. Just when you thought the group couldn’t get any more exciting Joe and Leighann married on August 18th 2012.

May 2013: AARON CHARLES

Almost exactly 2 years ago we had our “Most Popular Band” contest and our of all the bands in the area 11 made it into the finals (there was a tie for the one spot). Most of the bands that were in the finals were no brainers but there were a few surprises. One of those are our Featured band of the month for May 2013, Aaron Charles. The band started off in February of 2008 but like all bands went through changes.

The band is Currently consists of:  James "the Arbiter" Murphy (Vocals), Frank Davidavage (Vocals), Devin Carrol (Bass Guitar), Zach Campbell (Lead/Rhythm Guitar), & TJ Sahutsky (Drums/Percussion) And just like Hootie and the Blowfish, there is no Aaron in the band. The guys currently have 4 independent releases, the most recent this past fall, “The Just Face Session” and this year will see the release “Our Little Secret”. The guys of Aaron Charles can also be found at purevolume.com/aaroncharles, soundclick.com/aaroncharles and can you believe the guys have a Myspace page! Completely forgot about that place. Check them out, myspace.com/aaroncharlesbaby. Of course check them out on Face Book at facebook.com/aaroncharlesbaby.

I had the opportunity to talk with their one vocalist James that told me all about the band and its members. As you’ll see they might be a house hold name but their longevity shows they aren’t going anywhere but up.

“Aaron Charles as you know it today has evolved a lot since our early years. I think more than anything what separates us from other bands is our message, and why we do what we do. It's not about money or fame; it's about playing music we love to listen to for people just like ourselves, people who love metal. Not only that, but taking it one step further and making our songs not just blatant hate, like a lot of death metal bands, but changing the lyrics and invoking emotion and giving people something they can hold on and relate to. Aaron Charles is my first band, and I wouldn't honestly have it any other way. These guys are my best friends, and my second family.

James: “I grew up listening to rap, Rap and country. I was never into classic rock. Neither of my parents were very musical or musically inclined. I got the rap from my father, (the black side of my family, if you will) and the country from my mother. When I got into middle school, my horizons expanded ever so slightly, becoming a huge fan of bands like Adema and Linkin Park. Then high school came around and at the same time, My mother and I moved into a new house, right next to another kid in school I had a hatred and a rivary with. After a few months, that rivalry and hatred subsided, and we became best friends. He then introduced me to my very first metal CD, one that i still hold very dear to my heart today, and one that I credit to teaching my how to scream. That CD was Avenged Sevenfold's "Waking the Fallen".

After that, my curiosity wanted more. I thought to myself, "I really like that scream he's doing.. I wish I could learn how to do that." So I did. I took the CD with me, in my walkman, and while walking to and from school, I sang, or rather, screamed, to myself the entire 20-25 minute walk home. Then I'd practice more at home... make videos. Eventually, I found new bands to try to imitate and used them to help me perfect my style. Bands like At The Throne of Judgement, Alexisonfire, We Came With Broken Teeth, Job for a Cowboy and Waking the Cadaver all became part of my everyday listening habits.

Towards the end of my senior year of high school, a friend of mine was doing tryouts for a band. He gave me a CD and told me to learn number five. Enter The Black Dahlia Murder, my now favorite band. I learned the song, and went back to my friend, who had changed his mind about the ordeal. That's when I heard about another project going down: what was considered at the time to be the best local metal act, Among Thy Saints, was looking for a new vocalist. So I contacted Zach about it. He had a sample track ready, but with no words. He just told me to scream to the rhythm of the song, as I felt necessary. So I did, and before I was even done, I had a good feeling I'd be accepted. We wrote songs for quite a while, perfecting them, and the first time i sung on stage was not with my own band, but with Now! The City at the 09 Relay for Life.”

Francis, Frank, Davidavage

“A childhood brought up in Rock n' Roll, thanks to my father, is where my music story began. Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones and many acts of the 60s and 70s taught me groove, balance and solid song writing. Upon reaching high school, I entered the realm of metal. Incorporating bands such as Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer to my armory of tunes. My fellow guitar player and best friend Zach started our first band Acheron where I played drums. Covering old Metallica songs and jamming to thrash. Later on I joined up with a classic rock outfit called Kiss the Sky. We ran rampart for around a year or so playing bars and small venues. Lastly, after a small falling out, Zach and I reunited and started Aaron Charles. The musical career I've lead so far has been fun and enlightening. I can only imagine where it's going next.”

Devin Carroll

“I grew up listening to classic rock type stuff. But, I was influenced by/listen to Tool, Neurosis, Mastodon, TBDM, The Red Chord, Origin, Cephalic Carnage, Abiotic, Skeletonwitch, Burning The Masses, and others.

I recently joined Aaron Charles. I met Jimmy, Zach, and Frank from working at Lowe's, and as we got talking about our musical interests, we found we matched very well at a covienant time, right as Dustin was about to leave the band. I offered to join them, and have been with the band for several months now. It's a pretty thrilling experience, and I can't wait to play even more shows with the guys.”

Zachary William Campbell

“I started playing guitar when I was around 14. When I started, I was into the Red Hot Chili Peppers and wanted to learn my favorite tracks from their album “Californication.” Not long after initially starting, my father introduced me to Metallica via the song “Orion.” I was blown away by the track and it wasn’t long until I was playing through every track from “Kill ‘em All” through “…And Justice For All” every day after school.

I formed a couple of bands around the time that I was 16: Acheron and Asunder. Frank was involved in Acheron as the drummer, and when Asunder came around, Dustin hopped on board playing bass. Asunder disbanded when Dustin went to college and I was invited to join Among thy Saints. Around the time that I was 19, Among thy Saints had called it quits and I had a short stint filling in as a bassist for Defend Your Own before exiting the local scene entirely for almost a year.

After the yearlong absence, Jimmy, Frank, and I got together and formed Aaron Charles in 2008. Soon after, Dustin joined as our bassist and TJ as our drummer. We started out writing stereotypical songs with goofy lyrics, but eventually things became more serious and by 2009 we had written “The Just Face Sessions.” Three years after that we finished “Our Little Secret” and released it the following year.

Aaron Charles has been a cherished part of my life for the last five years. There’s nothing better than being able to write and play music with your best friends, and that’s what I’ve been able to do.”

T.J., Teofil Jeffrey Sahutsky

“I started my drumming career at the age of ten. I got my first drum set at the age of 14. I am self-taught and jammed to bands like Weezer, Alien Ant Farm, System of a Down, Korn, and Disturbed to become a better drummer. When I got good enough, I joined my dad’s classic rock band. I always wanted to play in a metal band though, so in high school a couple of my buddies and I would jam, but it never went farther than a basement, or garage.

My senior year of high school my buddies asked me to join their punk band, it was called the Arsenal, so I jammed with them and enjoyed it and stuck around with them for two years. I had a lot of experience with them, we played a lot of shows, and made an E.P. A couple years later I wasn’t really happy with the punk scene anymore, metal always had my heart so I decided to call it rap and quit the band. After quitting I practiced a lot, learning new techniques such as blasting, playing off time, and working on my double bass.

I believe in the summer of 2009 is when Aaron Charles asked me to try out for them. Ever since we've been playing concerts, making several t shirt designs, and releasing three E.P. s and a full length. I have accomplished a lot with this band and I can’t wait to see with the future holds for us.”

The guys wanted to also say:

"We want to remind the fans that social media and Youtube are the new ways of broadcasting talent such as ourselves, and buying our merchandise is not only doing us good, but you, as the fans, it's not cheap o be a band, let along try to be successful, so every bit helps. Remember to go to this site and buy our new full length EP! thanks in advance.

July 2013: Alison Standby

There seems to be more and more bands popping up today. Some of these bands have brand new people that are either just getting to the point that they can play in front of a crowd or the kids that are now grown up. The one constant though are the bands with seasoned vets. One such band, that not only has Skook veterans but are some of the BEST in their respected areas. This is why it’s a no brainer that our Featured Band for July 2013 is the Phenomenal ALISON STANDBY. When the guys sent me their info I found it so well written I didn’t have to add much (Thanks Paul)

ALISON STANDBY is a newish rock band from all over the area. Made up of 4 extremely talented and “very well oiled” seasoned musicians who not only know how to put on a KILLER ROCK SHOW but have been around the block on the Pennsylvania music scene for well over 2 decades.

This new band THRIVES on mostly the hard rock genre with POWERHOUSE SONGS from the 80’s and 90’s metal Era as well as the heavy hitters on radio today giving their audience a show they won’t soon forget!!!

While so many other rock bands out there are looking for the party….ALISON STANDBY IS THE PARTY!!!….The guy’s in the band have all known each other for years and have had their share of success in VERY POPULAR Pennsylvania rock bands such as “National Recording Artist” CANTO 6, POPTART MONKEYS, METROPOLIS, YADA YADA YADA, and FALLACY!

ALISON STANDBY delivers a Knock-out energy filled show with amazing light’s, A killer hard rock sound, A monster Bass, Loud guitars, Killer vocals, and a Drummer not from any planet that we know of!!!

With insane high energy ALISON STANDBY will most definitely leave you wanting more….So if your ears are bleeding when you leave a show and can’t remember a single thing the next morning…….Then YES, you got your Ass kicked at a ALISON STANDBY SHOW!!

On drums is Squeak, a musician that has been around since before some of us even had an instrument and we probably bought our instrument off him lol. Playing most of his life, playing drums in many bands from local fire and banquet halls, bars, clubs to concert and arena venues. Performed on recordings, TV and cruise ships including the Grand ol' Opry in Nashville, Philadelphia convention center, Vet and Beaver Stadiums, Allentown Fair grounds, Montage Mountain and Penn’s Peak. As well as sharing the stage with many legendary artists such as Trace Adkins, Laurie Morgan, Charlie Daniels, Mark Chesnut, The Oakridge Boys to name a few. Squeak has played in more than a few bands such as Fallacy, Fat Robbie & the Rocket 88's, Metropolis, Tommy Schafer & the Blue Mountain Ramblers, The Mudflaps, Yada Yada Yada , Alison Standby , Sapphire!

Kevin Mcshaw has been playing guitar since he was 9 years old and with the guidance of GOD, family and perseverance he has not looked back since. He is happily married to his muse and has one child, an amazing daughter who makes him more proud every single day. Like many of us Kevin has been  influences by the staples in music such as Alex Lifeson of Rush, Randy Rhoads (if you don’t know who Randy is then seriously go away), the MAN Les Paul and anyone who picks up a guitar because it’s not what you know it how you listen. He has been blessed to play in a wide range of local acts such as Too Daze Gone, Pitchdrift, Sedagive and Berks county based Canto 6, who had the distinct privilege of cutting a record with world renowned producer Dan Malsch.

He plays Gibson and Fender guitar, Marshall amps (that go to 11) and various pedals that resemble a NASA control panel.

Just like his fellow band mates, Bassist Mike Ritsko has been a fixture in the area for years. Mike is a self-taught musician who has many years of experience playing both live and in the studio. I had the opportunity to see Mike play years ago in Metropolis and being self-taught isn’t a bad thing by any means. He has demonstrated his wide array of taste in music over the years in bands such as: Kraze, Shine, Beggars Day, Bounce This!, Pitch Drift, Metropolis, Yada Yada Yada, and currently with Alison Standby. His influences range from heavy metal to the top forty bands of today. Including Rush and Iron Maiden to The Killers and Mumford & Sons.

He admires the talents of great Bassists like Geddy Lee, Steve Harris and Chris Squier. Utilizing vintage Ampeg amplification to Eden, Gibson, Fender, Roland and Boss gear.

Fronting Alison Standby is our Second 2 time Featured Artist, Paul Reddon. A native of Bloomsburg, PA Paul has done more in the local music scene than some big named acts. He’s been all over the state and the east coast over the years. Whether as part of the Original Poptart Monkeys, Yada Yada Yada or now in Alison Standby for over a decade and a half Reddon hasn’t slowed down or lost a step. Paul’s IDOLS are Steve Perry as a vocalist and Steven Tyler as a songwriter and Front man, and you can tell by such talent. I’ve known Paul for over a decade, since the early days of the PTM, and I know for fact that not only is he an incredible front man and singer but a HELL of great guy and he has become the measuring stick for other singers in the area.

Anytime you see these guys you’ll see Alison Standby will be making you STAND UP and Not SIT DOWN!

Come out Friday, July 12th when they rock the Minersville block party!

The Return of the Featured Artist, November 2013

Jacob Kulick

Through the generations Tamaqua has been turning out great musicians, our return to and new Featured Artist. The first time I heard this guy was when I had to pleasure to see the band Story of Another play. Not only does he have the talent but he has the dedication to music that will without a doubt bring him success. Other than multiple singles he’s released on iTunes, his first full EP named “Runaway” is being released This Monday 11/11/13, also available on iTunes. With supporting shows coming. This artists is a great example of the next generation doing Schuylkill County proud. Our return to the Featured Artist is the Singer/Guitarist Jacob Kulick.

Raised in West Penn Township outside of Tamaqua, Jake started his pursuit of music as a teenager when he got his first

guitar for Christmas unlike some other musicians though he also got his first mixer.

“I consider this the first day of my life because my life would be changed from this day forward.”

He used music as an outlet and a hobby. He also shared his love of music like all of us when playing in the band Story of Another with three of my best friends. The band had a great following playing underage shows and a few local venues before life took over. The members of the band would go their separate ways to attend college.

“I realized that with every new recording I tracked, the more obsessed I became with making the songs sound professional. I wanted to know what professionals do to a song in order to make it sound tight. I wanted to write more relatable songs, and most importantly catch songs.”

Kulick would move to Philadelphia to attend The Art Institute of Philadelphia to learn more and improve his craft.

“It was very appealing to me because it had many courses that sounded interesting and it was in Philadelphia. I think the big city attracted me because I was from a small town, and had big dreams. I also knew that my chances of creating networks in Philadelphia would be better.”

Jacob played his first solo show at the TLA in Philly, opening for Tyler Ward. and has been playing the area ever since. “I was so nervous I barely remember it to be honest.”

Networking between the Tamaqua and Philadelphia areas has been a payoff too. He has had the great opportunity to work with Sigma Sound, working and learning from some of the best producers, artists, and technicians in the business.

“Today, I am proud of where I am, and who I am. I am still obsessed with music, as well as writing music and singing. Even if writing music is not my profession, I'll never stop writing and performing.”

December 2013: Toolshed Jack

Last December our last featured band of 2012 was “Ricky and the Ricardo’s” one of the area’s best bands still today. No to many bands survive from year to year with all the members, same music style and doing the same thing they did last year. Our next feature is another such band.

Every so often there comes a band that has an energy that is contagious, Our December 2013, and last featured band is no exception. I’ve personally loved their shows for some time now. A band that covers all areas of music and all the areas of Skook. We are happy and proud to say that our new Featured Band of the Month are Joel, Steve-O, Brian, Tommy, Maggie B the member of Toolshed Jack!

*Side note before reading. Every mention of how they got their name came from directly when sending us their info. I found it funny so I left it in lol.

Even though they will be the first to admit that they can’t stand the name Toolshed Jack, it has grown with them in steadily impressive popularity for over a decade, so it looks like they’re stuck with it. Their appearances have touched every corner of the county and beyond. They have not only performed for dozens of bars, but for dozens of weddings, private parties, block parties and casinos; not to mention the honor to play memorable telethons, and fund-raisers and hear the announcement of that name of the worst-named band ever. (From their own lips) “I mean, really?: The name ‘Toolshed Jack’ makes us not only sound like a country band (not true), but so backwoods hillbilly that you would think instead of guitars/drums/keyboard they play jug/spoons/washboard.”

So how did this locally-founded band get its start? Mahanoy City’s own and current lead guitarist Joel was one of the co-founders of the group. High school buddy/Keyboardist/trumpeter (yes trumpet) Brian Todd was next to join the original lineup about two years later, followed closely behind by ex-drummer Blazer. And by 2004 the lineup also included ex-bass guitarist Scotty Z, rounded out with the find of Shenandoah’s own and current bass guitarist Steve-O.

The band lost Blazer to family time and Scotty to the warmth of Florida, but was able to recruit current drummer T-Bone Flamini (Mahanoy City) (and the THIRD person to be a 2 time feature (With Y.M.I. who he plays with part time) to complete the foursome for a few years. Steve-O was lead singer, and Toolshed Jack, despite its wretched name (Where did this name even COME from??), worked very hard to develop its style, performance, and fine tune its party presence.

Up to and including 2012, Toolshed Jack covered many of the day’s popular songs, as well as keeping true to some of rock history’s most memorable music. Steve-O, drawing from his experiences in several other local cover bands from the past like Itchy Fingers, Onionhead, and Cool Daddy Groove, and T-Bone, drawing from his time in bands such as Y.M.I., Badd Monkee, and Dick and the Jargonauts, positively influenced Joel and especially Brian Todd (whose musical past was more geared toward his trumpet performances in Penn State’s Marching Blue Band and several other orchestral climates, which even MORE baffles the decision of the band being named ‘Toolshed Jack’).

Although their continual hard work and dedication to their loyal fans was well-received and highly appreciated, they decided in 2012 to search all around eastern Pennsylvania to add a female lead singer to improve the overall show. Ultimately, that search ended up coincidentally leading them right back home with Maggie B from Mahanoy City. Although a newbie to the cover band stage, she has already learned and grown impressively and gets better with each performance. With that concludes the current fivesome, ready to rock to all the current popular music, as well as a very wide range of genres that span from the late 1960’s to 2000’s, as long as it is fun for the crowds.

In case you missed it, with all the people coming and going, the band currently consists of Maggie B on vocals, Steve-O on bass guitar and vocals, Joel on lead guitar, T-Bone on drums, and Brian Todd on keyboards, trumpet, and background vocals. Musically they will play almost any song that is popular with the crowd in front of them, although they still cling to certain songs that make us all happy. Each member has their own favorite musical style, but ultimately they feel that if the crowd leaves happy, their job has been accomplished.

Not too many local bands play weddings. Toolshed Jack prides itself on being an outstanding wedding band. Musical and venue flexibility is a strength they see in themselves when it comes to adapting to different needs of their clients. Of course during special occasions as these they clean up their wardrobe and performance to appear as classy as the event (that is until the customer demands they turn into the party fun band they hired, which then the crowd needs to ready themselves).

They try to keep the fans in the loop of what’s going on themselves with their presence on Facebook (www.facebook.com/TSJBANDPAGE), Twitter (www.twitter.com/toolshedjack), YouTube (www.youtube.com/toolshedjack), and Reverb Nation (www.reverbnation.com/toolshedjack). This might be one of the most accessible bands in the area as far as social media is concerned. Individual members have their own accounts and are often involved in keeping in touch with fans. The Toolshed Jack fan base has grown to follow them all around the area and beyond, both in person and through these social media sites.

What’s in store for the future of Toolshed Jack? Slowing down is not part of that at all. An established, dependable, and reliable band like this doesn’t come around often, and they know that. They are all great friends with each other, and the bond they have on stage is carried off the stage as well. So keep your eyes open for all things Toolshed

And as far as the band name, it has taken them this long to establish such a great reputation, so to their dismay: They’re stuck with it.
