Featured Band of the Month for January 2014,

Willie Jack and the Northern Light

There has always been those band names with a name in the title but had nothing to do with the band itself. Alice in chains has no members named Alice, Jefferson Airplane has no Jeffersons or Airplanes (I checked), Jethro Tull is the name not a member, Thompson Twins aren’t related or even twins!, Hootie and the Blowfish has no Hootie or Blowfish!, and locally Toolshed Jack, Ricky and the Ricardo’s, Aaron Charles, Asking Andy have nothing to do with Toolsheds, Ricky’s, or asking anything! I know it can be confusing but it’s a good way for people to label something. After all how many of us were upset when Alice in chains didn’t have a hot chick singing or seeing the first Hootie and the Blowfish video (they use to be on Mtv before it sucked) and there were NO BLOWFISH! Our new Featured band for January and first of 2014 has this same problem. So who’s Willie Jack or is it Willie and Jack and do they live near the Northern lights? Guess we’ll have to see.

Willie Jack and the Northern Light has been playing their own style of music for more than a decade bringing fun, excitement and fine musicianship to every venue you can imagine (festivals, clubs, special events and gatherings) throughout Pennsylvania and beyond. Drawing heavily from a multitude of influences and styles, yet flavored with their own sense of original expression, their genre has been labeled Jam, Experimental and Americana.

No stranger to the festival scene, Willie Jack and the Northern Light has appeared at Bears Picnic every year since the Central PA festival’s inception, opening for the likes of New Riders of the Purple Sage, Dark Star Orchestra and Splintered Sunlight. Other noted appearances have included the NY State Harvest Festival, the PA State Greenway Conference, Gasstock, LibertyFest, Trails End HarvestFest, Jam Along the Creek, Peace of MindFest The Dam Show, Kind Roots Festival, and S.H.A.R.E Fest and Willies Midnight Crazy Train Campout. Not the venues you would see regularly on our page since they’re special occasions and not many venues now days have “jam bands”.

Coming from a gifted musical family, WJ’s front man Jeff Oshetski is also lead guitar, harmonica, and vocals. Jeff has shared the stage with members of the New Riders, as well as the Zen Tricksters and opened for many national acts. Equal virtuosity can be heard whether he is playing acoustic or electric, and he has a strong soulful voice.

Joe Raup formed the band with Oshetski, plays rhythm guitar and adds clear vocal harmonies and sweet rhythm accents. Joe also shares most of the songwriting duties with Jeff.

The Bass (not the fish) is Wes Fahringer, who, you guessed it, also shares vocals. Wes is a Penn State graduate and all round great musician.

Joe Ciarvella, the bands drummer and Producer, also comes from a gifted musical legacy. He signed on in April of 2011. Joe recorded, mixed and produced the band’s debut album in Willie Jacks private project studio, Peach Mountain Records. Joe toured the country with many noteworthy bands including International JamBand pioneers, The Zen Tricksters. Joe also has played with many former Grateful Dead members and their extended family of bands...i.e. (Members of Phil and Friends, Ratdog, JGB, NRPS) Joe has played music with legends of the Jamband scene and brings this unique perspective to the collective stew. (You can see some of Joe’s drum set in our Schuylkill drummers album)

Mike Whalen on keys has really allowed this band to go to another level of musicianship. Mike can add beautiful piano runs or jump into synthesized funk fills and when he and Oshetski share leads.

WJ released their debut album, "Where You Want To Be," in July 2012, Willie Jack & the Northern Light continues their tradition of delivering the goods to the fans...

Whether playing acoustic and exploring rural roots or jamming electric and going into experimental realms Willie Jack and the Northern Light always delivers a little more than just a fine show. With a loyal multi-generational fan base and positive relationships with other regional musicians, one can never tell what surprises might turn up at a Willie Jack show, but it’s ALWAYS a good dance, a good listen and a great time.

We had a chance to catch up with some of the band members to talk about their process:

Mike Whalen, WJNL keyboardist:

As we've been playing these songs live for the past year--- especially since Joe C (Joe Ciravella formerly of the Zen Tricksters and Post Junction), joined the group --- we have developed a level of familiarity with the tunes which made the studio process very comfortable.

The obvious difference from our live versions would be the length (laughs): where we often improvise songs out to ten minutes or more, the studio versions are much more clean, abbreviated, and melodic.  Definitely less banging on my part! (laughs)

In a live performance, you may react to different notes you hear and rhythms you pick-up on --- making each rendition unique.  I really never play things the same way twice ---- I use live performances as another way to practice and experiment.  At the Peach Mountain studio, i did want to stick to the basic melodic structure and simple fills developed over the past year.  Keep it simple, Simon, was my plan! (Laughs)

But entering the studio situation was similar to "live" situations because i was reacting to what was put in front of me --- I was hearing the percussion and bass tracks for the first time.

If I recorded again today, who knows how it would turn out? But I'm sure I would not be as satisfied…

Featured Band of the Month for February 2014,

Red Halo

Who is Red Halo you may wonder? Well, Red Halo is a Shamokin based rock band who covers modern to classic rock, southern rock, as well as original songs. The band consists of members, Al Dobson, Lee Lentes, Ed Mertz, and Scott Slodysko. All the members of Red Halo have been playing since a young age and been dedicated to their music.  These musicians are no stranger to performing they have a fantastic stage presence and won't disappoint.

Al Dobson plays bass guitar and does vocals for the band and has been playing for thirty-five years. He has been playing in nightclubs since the age of fourteen and is still going!  Al's music has been played on mainstream radio stations throughout PA, NY, and NJ. His love for performing is very clear by his energy that is shown onstage.

In addition to Al, Lee Lentes also does vocals and guitar for Red Halo. Lee has been playing the guitar since he was just eight years old! He has been writing songs since fifteen and became a well-known local guitarist and composer. He has played both nationally and internationally, most recently playing in The Valley Boys. He has also recorded and released solo albums, but is now the driving force in Red Halo.

To add another guitar player to the mix we have Ed Mertz.  He started his career playing guitar at the age of fourteen and stuck with it! Ed has played in many local bands and recorded original songs with local artists. His style of playing made him the perfect fit for Red Halo.

Scott Slodysko brings everything together as Red Halo's drummer. Scott grew up surrounded by music and began to play drums at twelve. He is self-taught and started from polka to punk!  He is fantastic to watch with his style of drumming with hand tricks. Scott has been with Red Halo since they formed and is a valued member of the band.

The band released a new single on February 6th with an interview on ourtownradio.net. They will also be releasing their new album on March 29th with tour dates to follow. So keep an eye out for Red Halo!

Be sure to add them at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Red-Halo/299994770019092

Featured Band of the Month for May 2014,

JUSTUS

This month we have a newer band with a ton of experience and a pure LOVE of music. Most of these guys have been fixtures of Skook music for many years and have been on our page in other projects since day one. Missing Lynx, Wild Cat or Bwahaha they all brought that something special to music and the music scene. Outside of the band these guys give back with some of them being part of or teaching at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center (plug!). All these factors and so many more are the reasons we are proud to have JUSTUS be our new featured band of the month.

“Independent studies have shown that rock music played by skilled musicians can lead to dancing, good times and increased revenue for venue owners.” Results may vary.

Justus refer to themselves are just some guys with a handful, or so, of guitars, a boomin’ drum kit and an attaché case full of blues harps. Justus plays them live. Justus plays them well. Real Rock and Roll Played Right.” Well said.

Some of us are asking who are the men of Justus? Lead/backup Vocals & Lead/Rhythm Guitar is LeRoy "Buddy" Musselman, Lead/Backup Vocals & Blues Harp (Harmonica for the uneducated lol) by Jack Kulp, Doug Betz- Bass Guitar, Billy Frye drums

Buddy started playing guitar in 1971 and performed live for the first time at the age of 12. Coming from a musicial family this really isn’t much of a surprise. Eight years of guitar lessons/music theory and two years of vocal lessons prepared him for a wide variety of musical projects. Buddy started his professional career playing bass guitar in the Robert Hoppes Orchestra, Country Band and banjo in the Northeast Pennsylvania String Band before making the transition to rock. Over the last 3 + decades, Buddy has performed in several local bands such as, Holeshot, Midnite Rain, Missing Lynx (with our member Tom), Ground Zero, Firkin, 3AM, and like some of the others, Bwahaha plus he filled in with several accomplished Bluegrass bands over time. Buddy is currently the guitar/bass teacher at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center where he passes on the gift to young aspiring musicians and his philosophy that music is an extension of a musician's life and emotions. Music is a universal language, rejoice and be glad in it. May it comfort your soul... Anyone that sees Buddy play can see and feel that.

Jack’s musical career began in 1964 (before classic rock was classic) as a lead vocalist and blues harp player in Williamsport where he played for several rock bands before moving to Pottsville in the 70’s.  He says “The only reason I originally took up the blues harp was because I was the only guy in the band with free hands!” for the most part he has been performing ever since, most notably with Pinch, Essence, Ma Rutts, The Recaps, Ffogg, Kulprit, Coal Hole Soul, The Meat, Wildcat, 3AM, Bwahaha and currently he is part of the Sterling Koch Trio with our previous Featured Artist Sterling Koch (probably got that from the trio’s name). His musical philosophy is summed up as follows: “Playing is an obsession for me. There is only one feeling that surpasses making good music with good friends. I just can’t remember what it is! You can take the man out of the music, but you can never take the music out of the man.”

Mr. Betz got his first bass guitar in the early 80’s; it was a Zapp from Cunningham Guitar Company. After some time learning how to make noise he joined Forum. The summer of 1983 was the last time he played in a band for 30 years. In the late winter of 2012 he picked up that old four-stringed friend again and, with the help of a couple of really good teachers and friend,  one of whom is bandmate Buddy Musselman, Doug got back in the saddle and picked up some new skills. Doug joined Bwahaha in 2013 and was their bass player until the band disbanded late that year. Doug brings a love of The Who, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, and The Clash to the band along with movie star good looks. He is the eye candy for the ladies (their words not mine lol). He looks forward to playing for you in the near future!

Billy Frye is the Drummer and youngster of the band. Born in 1975 (when many of the band was playing) he has always loved playing the drums (us too). He was in multiple bands before Justus, including Guilty Conscience, Never Satisfied & Bwahaha playing classic rock music. When his latest band disbanded in October 2013, he took a break, was then asked to join Justus with 4 great musicians.

Justus might seem like the new kids on the block but knowing where these guys have come from and where they go anyone can see that they are exactly what the music scene is all about and they sound and look nothing like Joey McIntyre or Donnie Wahlberg. At the end of the day these guys really do Justus to their craft.

Check out the guys at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Justus/679812942036859

And their BFF Neal Norlike

Justus is booked through   Tamaqua Area Music Promotions.

We’re members of the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce.

Featured Band of the Month for June 2014,

Another Side

Bands have come and gone in Schuylkill County over the years, members from one band starting a new band with people that were in yet another band. The cycle goes on and on, and obviously this is what the music business has been like since day one. The only people that are in a band with the same people from day one are the kids (and some older guys) that started a band last month. There are few exception to this rule, such as out new Featured Band of the Month for June, Another Side.

Another Side Plays the best classic rock hailing from Skook. All fire members are experienced and talented musicians who know how to have fun. Fans relive the days of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s every night. With a perfect blend of musicianship and stellar vocal harmony, Another Side has been entertaining their great fans from East Central Pennsylvania since 2001. Another Side has performed at countless venues over the years. Nightclubs, fire halls, church festivals, private parties, weddings and fundraising benefits are all very familiar venues for Another Side. One of the hottest shows that Another Side hosts every year is known as The All-Star Jam. This is a large-scale concert in which Another Side performs with members of these former nationally recorded musical groups: The Other Side, Tucker Young, and The Jordan Brothers.

Renee “Peach” Gubala, Lead Vocals, Percussion, Renee “Peach” Gubala from Ringtown, originally from New Jersey, Renee moved to PA as a teenager with a newly discovered natural vocal talent. At 15, she added her powerful voice as lead singer of local band, Locomotion. She performed with them for 5 years and opened national for national acts such as Chubby Checker, The Coasters, Freddie "Boom Boom" Cannon, The Chiffons and The Teenagers. Over the years Renee has had the opportunity to play with the other great local acts Alter Vine, Quadra, and Renegade. Gubala found a home 20 years ago with “The Fabulous Boleros” being formed by Jim “Rockgod” Siemanis of Minersville. Renee and Jim have worked together since then in a few musical projects, which eventually lead to the birth of Another Side in 2001. As an original member of AS Peach has been belting out the lyrics of Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Janis Joplin, and others.

Jim “Rockgod” Siemanis adds the Bass Guitar and Vocals from Minersville.  Jim is a seasoned veteran, who is no stranger to the stage. The “Rockgod”, as he is referred to by his bandmates, is an original member of the Other Side, from the 60’s to the 80’s. As a true “Lord of the Lower Notes”, Jim leads the band with enthusiastic musical flare. As the founding member of Another Side, he creates the foundation of the band by delivering consistently solid bass lines. Jim has played with The Fabulous Boleros (with Peach), The Frantastics and “G.C.”. During his years with The Other Side, Jim has had the great opportunity to tour the East Coast from Vermont to Key West, FL. Like many of us his musical influences came from bands such as The Rolling Stones and Vanilla Fudge, but his most revered icon, was virtuoso bass guitarist, Stanley Clarke. With many hours of hard work and by intricately studying his mentor, Jim developed a playing style like few in the area.

Drummer Frank “Blazer” Blozusky, drum Frackville has long-time roots in music, Frank has been a member of Another Side since the summer of 2002. For over 30 years, Blozusky has been a well-known and respected drummer in the local music scene. He was born and raised in Maizeville, a suburb of Gilberton, where he began his music career at the young age of 7. He had his first public appearance behind the drum kit in 1976 at the local bar “Stella’s” with a band called “The Kids”. At the age of 14, Frank became the full-time drummer of Whitey’s Band, a ten-piece horn band from Girardville. After many years with them, Frank and a few members of the band formed a variety group called “Steppin’ Back” which performed for 20+ years!

While living in Philly, In the early 90’s, he drummed with The Pain killers and Shotgun Wedding, and Tidal Wave. In 1994, Blozusky began a 6-year tour with an 80’s rock band called “NEON BLONDE”, until it finished in the year 2000. Frank has had the pleasure to play with great local bands Sapphire, The Mudflaps, Toolshed Jack, Doc and Macker and Joe Jordan of The Jordan Brothers. His influences include Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel), Buddy Rich, Steve Gadd (Eric Clapton) and Steve Smith (Journey).

One of the two great guitarists of Another Side is Jim Juranis from St. Clair is a great and new addition to the band, joining in early 2011. Born and raised in Skook Jim has been a respected guitarist for over 40 years. His expertise has been shown in the bands Sheriff Jones, Section 8, The Fat Cats and a host of others. His performances set aside; Jim has paid it forward by sharing his talents,   teaching countless guitarists for many years. Some professionals who have influenced his guitar work are Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, and Carlos Santana. As a consummate professional himself, Jim rips through guitar leads with the fluidity and precision of a Japanese Hibachi Chef.

Bill Lindenmuth, Another Side’s other guitarist (and Dad of our member Jess) comes to us from Cressona. Another Side is very proud to share the stage with Billy (a.k.a. “Birry-San”) who has played with many popular area bands since the 1970’s. Originally from Shenandoah, Bill has been a well-known and respected front man/guitar artist for years. He’s been able to perform with the bands Mammoth Fog, Section 8, Onionhead, The Mojo Dogs, Jackwagon and The Fat Cats. After filling in a few times with Another Side over the years, Bill became a permanent attachment of the band in April 2011. His blazing vocals whip the band’s fans into a frenzy show after show. Lindermuth has a vast and powerful passionate blend of vocal styling, including those of Robert Plant (Led Zepplin), Paul Rodgers (Bad Company), and Joe Cocker. As for his guitar work, Bill fills the air with that incredible full sound that makes a good band great. Bill’s musical influences over the years have been Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Another Side’s own Jimmy Juranis.

To add that little something special to shows is fiddle/violinist Adam Weiderhold, (who we had the distinct pleasure to have run sound and lights at our “Amped Up for O.J.” Benefit a few years ago). Adam has the stage experience that one could ask for, playing with some area greats including UUU. To add to Another Sides great shows Adam also runs the sound.

Every great band needs their crew and Another Side is no different. The band not only acknowledges their technicians but treat them like part of the band. Chris Gubala Lighting Technician, McGyver Robin Greeninger Stage Crew, and Edith Pope Marketing and Merchandise.

Many bands and musicians have come and gone from the area over the years. Some move some retire, some just play in their basement for fun. The members of Another Side have taken their love and talent and not only been a permanent cornerstone to the area music scene but have been a bench mark for other bands to look up to. Get out and see Another side of Skook music.

March 2014:   5 Ton Jack

Who doesn't like a Great Party Band? This month’s featured band is just that and more. 5 Ton Jack is a group of very talented musicians that have been selected by the bands vocalist and bass player, Adam Shook. Shook took the time to collect popular songs from over the years and created a list of the best to play. After achieving his goal of a unique inventory of songs Adam recruited Ian Carroll, Sheri Bayne, and Brent Seip. The band has no need for special lighting or technical sound system, but they never disappoint with different set list practically every night it’s like seeing a different show every time.

Adam Shook has been playing bass since he was 17 years old. He started playing music with a few people from the area, starting off with blues and blue grass songs. Shook’s first band was a classic rock, blues band called ” Old Ladies Sadie”, which he played with for about two years. After seven years of not playing to help raise a family Shook missed playing and created 5 Ton Jack. Sheri Bayne the bands vocalists has always enjoyed singing. Coming from a very musical family, it was no surprise she followed in their foot steps. Bayne started singing in chorus and playing the violin at age 7, and then at age 15 she learned to play guitar. When she was 18 she had taken private vocal lessons to learn how to take her voice to the next level. Bayne joined a local band “Exiter”, but soon after moved to Southern Florida to pursue a solo career. She moved back up north a few years following and took a break from singing. After, working and getting laid of Bayne fell back into the music scene and played in the bands “Kizmet” and “Every Atom”. Following Bayne’s audition for “5 Ton Jack” everything was history, because she found her perfect fit.

Ian Carroll started playing guitar in middle school while he was in New Jersey. Over the years he has enjoyed playing in various Lehigh Valley lineups and enjoyed playing with some fantastic local musicians. Many great musicians have influenced Carroll such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kirk Hammett, Billy Joel and Green Day. Carroll now plays guitar and does vocals in “5 Ton Jack”.

Brent Seip also comes from a family of musicians and began playing the drums at age four. Since the 1980's Seip has played in a number of cover and variety bands, playing drums on a number of CD's for different bands. He has played various places ranging from Las Vegas to Utah. Some musicians that have influenced him are John Bonham, Tommy Aldridge, Graham Lear and Carter Beauford. Seip was introduced to “5 Ton Jack” from their vocalist, Sheri Bayne.

No matter when you see them there is no doubt that there will be “tons” of fun at every show.

Featured Band of the Month for July 2014, R.A.T.L.

In 2009 a new band hit the area, a band of energy, experience and talent. Like so many other bands in the area, their talent, energy and incredible shows is why our new featured band for July 2014 is the phenomenal, R.A.T.L.

Something you don’t see too often today is a “classic rock” band. R.A.T.L. brings those songs we all loved years ago back again but still brings today’s great music, add some country, funk and even some polka and that is a recipe for a great music. For more than 20 years the members have been Skook Musicians. The band consists of 3 original members that had been in a band together previously and added that one little thing that very few bands have, a father/daughter mix.

R.A.T.L. left the garage for the music scene between Mt. Carmel and Shamokin. Amanda, who had been retired but we all know how long a Skook musician can stay out of music, was talking to her dad Phil one day and said, “You should probably come out of retirement and come play with us, or at least come hang out at a practice.” A week later, Phil Krebs, a known fixture to local music, came out of retirement also and joined the band as a second guitar player. This freed up Amanda to take on more instruments and adding much more to their shows.

About a year later, in 2011, lead guitarist Ted became ill, and had to give up playing. To this day he is still greatly missed but can still be seen in the crowd now and then. This was the worst time for the band. That leads us to the present lineup.

Amanda Krebs - Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Keyboards, Mandolin, & Flute.  From the day she could walk and talk, Amanda was a musician. There was no doubt that this was what she would be doing with her life. Hailing from Coal Township, Amanda brings you the vocals from the raspy rock of Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge to a haunting version of "House of the Rising Sun". Amanda credits her musical talents to her Dad and fellow band member and her Mom for dealing with the many instruments that were brought home through the years, and thanks her local musical influences, including Rusty, Jeff, Bob, Chris and Rick from Hybrid Ice, The Badlees, Geof Levan, Harpo and so many others. Amanda enjoys performing and takes "Diva" as a compliment! (Personal note: I have personally had the pleasure to see Amanda perform some years ago at an open mic and to say she’s talented would be almost an insult. She doesn’t have blood she has music moving through her. There isn’t any room for regular blood.)

Phil Krebs - Lead & Rhythm Guitar, Vocals and Mandolin  Phil, a career bass player since the 70’s, has had the pleasure to play in bands like Hydra, BackTrack, and Phoenix. Mr. Krebs decided to try something different and picked up the lead guitar job. Now three years later he has never looked back. He not only brings the lead guitar for every song, but lead vocals now and then. Phil has said many times, he not only enjoys playing in a band, but getting to be in a band with his daughter makes it even better!

Ron Berresford - Bass Guitar,& Background Vocals Ron adds those rocking bass lines and incredible background of the band R.A.T.L. Listen up for those driving bass lines in some of those great classic songs such as "Black Magic Woman" and "White Rabbit" the backbone of all that R.A.T.L. has to offer. As if kicking butt on the bass wasn’t enough, Ron adds his great voice to the background to fill those vocals of the band.

Lynn Erney - Drums and Vocals  Erney comes from Mt. Carmel, brings the versatile rhythms to R.A.T.L. Much more than a drummer, Lynn adds all styles of beats  for "Gunpowder and Lead" and "Time of the Season". Like everyone else in the band Lynn adds background vocals to the show. Erney is the drummer so it’s no wonder that Lynn brings the comedy to R.A.T.L.

No band would be complete without their crew and R.A.T.L. is no different. Chuck Haertter is the band’s Sound and lights guy. Chuck has been part of the family for the last two years. He says he can't play an instrument and he only sings in the shower, but wanted to be in the music scene. From day one, the band wasn't going to let him go. Chuck has brought an element to the band they didn't have before, allowing them to concentrate on playing instead of what the sound and lights would be like.

No matter where you see the band play one thing is for sure. You’ll be leaving dizzy from the ground shaking and the heavens R.A.T.L.”ing!

Keep up to date with them online at www.RATLrocks.webs.com on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RATLrocks or see some of their live shows on YouTube  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLvWjuO5wRTilPs4ogm47Ow

July/August 2014: John Pe-We Damiter

They say that James Brown was the hardest working man in show business. That may be true but it also might just be because people don’t see the musicians of Skook. One of these men that are out there playing day in and day out and doing a HELL of a job at it is our Featured Artist for July/August. John Pe-We Damiter.

Pe-We, a native of the Skook has been playing music for almost his entire life, starting in 2nd grade. Like some musicians John had the support of his parents, getting a drum kit (not the instrumental choice of parents, mine included). Next Damiter ventured further learning organ (a Magnus, air driven chord organ none the less). Finally the day had come for his journey with the guitar including lessons from Musicland’s Father Ted. There are a few limitations to music lessons from the clergy and John hit this problem. Father Ted wouldn’t teach some of the songs Pe-We wanted to play so the next step would have to be made and Damiter starting with Dick Bindi and “that cool cat taught me how to jam” right from John’s mouth. At one point Pe-We spent time learning from Sammy Koury (“another cool cat”). Damiter was mesmerized by Sammy’s versatility. John wanted to jam more and more so finding class mates and others was the next natural step.

His first 3 piece band in high school was “Bingo”. Like all “first” bands it showed him what he wanted to do and how many other great musicians there were in the area. Sterling Koch, Jack Kulp, Liz Fabian, Mark Mahal, Bob Jenkins, Jim Juranis, Bill Lindenmuth and countless other (John wanted to apologize for the others out there that he didn’t name but you know who you all are). Like many of us John played in countless cover bands over the but found that getting together with other musicians, to just jam is where he wants to be doing.

Damiter has had the distinct pleasure to have shared the stage with some of the absolute best there is including (name drop time) the "All Star Band" with Joe Jordan , Mike Macker , Kim Burns ,Vinnie Kalochie, Jim Semanis , Dale Kaufman , Frank Blazer ,Renee Gubala,Edju Michalik, and last but not least, my favorite bunch of amigo's The boys from "Tucker Young" Karp, Schotty, Wap & Chico .

Not too long ago Pe-We got injure and was unable to do his “day job” for a time. He took this time to expand his music and solo work appearing first at the Open mic night at the Greystone, Pottsville. He

“limped in with the help of a friend and was introduced to Steve Foltin and the Boys Upstairs. I had such a great time with them along with a super sax player Mike McCready, and Whoomp there it is”

Many people in the public don’t think of how hard it is to get the chance to play in a venue for the first time. Venues are taking a gamble with new artists and this fact didn’t leave John’s mind over the years. He would like to thank the venues that supported him and took a chance on him and so many other Schuylkill Country Musicians (in no special order) The Greystone , Maroons Sportsbar , Vito's Coal Fired Pizza , The Wooden Keg , Fast Franks , Jimmy O's Sportsbar and Tom & Sandy Burns from the Club Paparazzi.

“I am proud to be a Schuylkill Musician. Come on out to hear my show. Make sure to let me know that "Schuylkill Musicians" sent ya.

(do we get free drinks?) Peace, rock on, live your dream.” John Pe-We Damiter

Sept. 2014, Gabriel Chamber Ensemble

Schuylkill Country has always had its mix of musician and group styles, rock, country, punk, blues, electric, and acoustic. On top of styles there are countless musicians in the county when including not only these bands and performers plus all the school bands. The one styles of music most people in the area wouldn’t think of is our focus for the September Featured Band of the Month the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble. Sometimes the info we get is better than anything I would write so why not get it right from the source.

“Celebrating its 25th Anniversary in Schuylkill County, the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble is about to present a concert series full of exciting music, and performed by highly professional musicians from Philadelphia, New Jersey, Lehigh Valley and more. With an audience that keeps on increasing (a record for chamber music: an average of 130 to 175 people – coming from as far as Delaware, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and of course from most parts of Schuylkill County), the Ensemble is proud of its achievements.

The Ensemble formed in 1990, when five professional classically trained musicians got together to sight-read chamber music for fun (most freelancers are involved in orchestra playing). The five friends (from Honey Brook, Hershey, Carlisle and Orwigsburg) quickly realized that they had something special to share with others: their music making was not only of high quality but created chemistry between the players that is rare at a first meeting.  This first session led to many more in order to present a first public concert in… Pottsville, under the name of C&B Chamber Players. Met by an enthusiastic audience, it was not long before the Ensemble scheduled other concerts.

Changing its name to Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, the non-profit organization created the first chamber music series in Schuylkill County, playing first in churches in Pottsville and Tamaqua, then at Penn State Schuylkill Campus, and now at Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Schuylkill Haven.  The repertoire goes from music for strings and piano to music with wind or brass instruments, voice and also music for small chamber orchestra. For its special silver anniversary, the Ensemble will have music with organ, with Rebecca Owens from Central Moravian Church, music with Tony Cecere, French Horn, music for string orchestra with the collaboration of the Madison String Quartet, NJ and artists from Philadelphia, Lehigh Valley, and West Chester.

But the Ensemble does not only put on concerts in the area. It also sponsors education programs. It presents school assemblies to elementary students – most of the time a first introduction to violin, viola, cello and bass to the children – sponsors string instruction to beginners (Pottsville, New Ringgold and Kempton) – distributes scholarships to High School Graduate students and to younger string players who wish to attend the summer music camps at Bear Crossing Music Studios in New Ringgold.

In 2010 the Gabriel Chamber Ensemble took on yet another project: the Youth Symphony. This orchestra was under the management of Schuylkill Symphony Orchestra. After the orchestra folded, the Schuylkill Youth Symphony looked for another organization that could help them out – leading to the new Gabriel Youth Orchestra. Under the direction of John F. Potlunas, former band director of the Tamaqua High School, the orchestra is open to all 7th to 12th graders who wish to experience orchestra playing. An audition is held in September of each year, and about 50 students then meet weekly to present two public concerts in Pottsville (D.H.H. Lengel Auditorium, Pottsville Middle School) and one concert for the 4th graders of Schuylkill County (held at the Pottsville High School Auditorium).

The Ensemble relies on grants, foundations and individual contributions. One of its most famous fundraising events is the Coffeehouse, held in New Ringgold in October. A “from artist to artist” event, the afternoon is filled with music, food and fun. Recent musicians featured included the Shellshocked Churchhills, Maggie Pierce and EJ, Down to Earth Band, Jordan Rast (now member of the Second Hand Suits), Jay Smar, Lester Hirsh, Maury Rutch, Mark Leeson, Ray Rushforth and many others.

In 2007 the group commissioned three new pieces, two by Swiss composers Daniel Andres and Christoph Henking, and one by African American Composer Dotti Anita Taylor.

In 2009 a new group, Trio Clavino, was formed. Simon Maurer, violin/viola and his long time colleagues Xun Pan, piano and Doris Hall Gulati, clarinet,  explored the wonderful repertoire for that formation, and had such fun, that they decided to organize concerts. The Trio returned from a successful five week concert tour in China the summer of 2010, and were invited to return again in 2012 and in 2013, performing Chinese and western Classical Music.
