SWANSBORO NC - Authorities aided by two residents tracked and took into custody a man suspected of robbing a Swansboro convenience store Friday morning, Swansboro police said.

At approximately 10:45 a.m., a man entered Short Stop Convenience Store, located at the intersection of N.C. 24 and Queens Creek Road, pulled a handgun and demanded money, said Lt. Ed Parrish of the Swansboro Police Department. The name of the man and the charges were not available at press time.

Police were made aware of the crime by Tim Piacitelli, who called 911 and tailed the man after he fled in a light-blue pickup truck. Piacitelli continued to feed 911 operators information as he followed the man down N.C. 24 and onto Belgrade-Swansboro Road, Parrish said.

Meanwhile, Eddie Privett, who lives on Belgrade-Swansboro Road, was listening to his police scanner during his lunch break.

"I heard them say that there was an armed robbery down there at (Short Stop)," said Privett, who is a member of the rescue squad.

Privett said he threw a two-by-four at the man's vehicle as he drove past his house.

Noticing that the truck was smoking, Privett decided to follow the growing train of vehicles chasing the pickup truck.

"When he come by on my house that guy was about to blow up," Privett said. "The truck wasn't going to make it very far."

Parrish, the man exited the vehicle near 1227 Belgrade-Swansboro Road and fled on foot. Privett waited in his own truck to see if the man doubled his tracks. He eventually did.

Privett said he followed him behind a church. When the suspect reached into his pocket, Privett through a tire iron at him, knocking him down. Privett pinned him and, shortly thereafter, was helped by Piacitelli, who had caught up with them.

"Me and (Piacitelli) got him on the ground and held him till the cops came and got him," Privett said.

"They were instrumental in helping on this arrest," Parrish said. "They were brave individuals to help pursue an armed suspect."

In addition to the two civilians, Parrish added that Swansboro Police officers were assisted by Onslow County sheriff's deputies and state troopers.

"It was a cooperative effort between civilians and law enforcement," said Parrish.
