Somerset and Dorset Postal History Group

WE ARE ALWAYS PLEASED TO WELCOME NEW MEMBERS & VISITORS TO OUR GROUP & MEETINGS.

We meet twice a year at Hornsbury Mill, Chard, TA20 3AQ in March and October, where we are entertained by guest speakers and members’ displays of Somerset & Dorset postal history as well as on broader aspects of postal history.

Our autumn meeting in 2024 is going to be on Sunday 13th October 2024 at the Hornsbury Mill, Chard.  Please make a note for your diary.

Our upcoming Spring meeting is on Sunday 17th March 2024 at the Hornsbury Mill, Chard, with cookies from 10am and starting at 10:30am.  John Cowlin will be displaying "WWI Political & Satirical postcards Part II", Bill Pipe has "WWI Naval Censorship", and Roger Martin will show "Alice in Wonderland".  Nick Bridgwater will be standing by with a mixed display on "Ancient and Modern". This will be followed by our usual displays from Members.  See here for the  invite.  Our annual subscription of £10 is also due, see the invite for details on how to pay if you do not plan to attend the meeting.

Our Autumn 2023 meeting took place on Sunday 15th October 2023 with displays on 'Satirical Postcards of WW I' by John Cowlin, 'Railway Company Perfins' from Bill Pipe,  'Postal Stationery Part 2' by Allen Cotton, and 'WW I censorship' from Graham Mark, along with the usual displays from members.  See here for a report of the meeting.  An online copy of the Autumn 2023 Journal is available here, password protected in the usual way.

Our Spring 2023 meeting took place on Sunday 12th March where we saw displays on 'Satirical Postcards from 1900-1914' from John Cowlin, 'Cognac' from Mike Tombs, and 'Postal Stationery' from Allen Cotten, along with the usual displays from members.  See here for a report of the meeting.  The online copy of the Spring 2023 Journal is available here, password protected in the usual way.

The S&DPHG Autumn meeting occurred on Sunday 16th October 2022, a week earlier than previously arranged, when, after a minutes silence for Graham Warren,  John Cowlin showed us mail from the French Revolution, Nick Bridgwater did "Bridgwater" along with a demonstration of the online draft Somerset Postal History Catalogue (available here, updates very welcome), and Bill Pipe showed items from his newly written-up Naval Mail.  See here for a report of the meeting.  The online copy of the Autumn 2022 Journal is available here, password protected in the usual way.

Our Spring meeting for 2022 went ahead on Sunday 20th March 2022 with a reduced attendance of eleven, with John Cowlin showing us some remarkable mainly foreign Military & Political Satirical postcards concerning the Boer War, followed by Bill Pipe displaying some WWI Naval mail, and by Nick Bridgwater showing commercial Bristol with perfins, meter mail, and some ephemera acquired during lockdown.  This was followed by our usual display of material from members.  The Spring 2022 Journal was distributed to the attendees and will be posted out shortly to those members that could not attend.  The Treasurer would be grateful for the annual subscription of £10, due from those members who could not attend the meeting.   See here for a report of the meeting.  An online copy of the Spring 2022 Journal is available here, password protected in the usual manner.
