Seeking Employment

A useful checklist for seeking employment:

    • Assess your strengths and weaknesses and identify skills.
    • Research the industry you are interested in. Work experience in your chosen field is a big advantage.
    • Create a sincere letter of application – one page only.
    • Assemble a detailed portfolio including a Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (CV) – this is a list of your contact details, skills, academic achievements, awards, part-time employment, work experience, hobbies, references and referees. Make it clear and well laid out. You may wish to create a shortened version of the Résumé to post with an application letter.
    • Practise interview skills.
    • Be prepared to send out many letters of application or go door knocking at companies that offer the work you want.
    • Prepare a set of good interview clothes that suit the job applied for.
    • Practise answers to standard interview questions and also questions you may ask the interviewer at the end of the interview.
    • Be positive.
