Description:
Online courses should begin with an ice breaker or team building activities that are designed for learners to get to know a little about each other! Wordle is an online tool that allows the user to create a "word cloud" from a list of words or from text that you select. Words that occur most often in text become larger words within the cloud. Once you have created your cloud, you can adjust the color scheme, the font, or the layout. When you like the way your Wordle looks, it will upload to your desktop as a jpeg file and you are free to use it any way you would like!Assignments:Step One:
Open another web browser page or tab by selecting File/New Tab in your browser.
In that tab go to Wordle, http://www.wordle.net
Step Two:
Select Create, type or paste in a “bunch of text” that describes you, then click Go. There are lots of features to adjust such as font and color scheme. You can also start with the Advanced tab which will allow you to select different sizes of text for each word.
Have fun playing and when you are satisfied, save it to the Public Gallery, name it, and click OK.
Step Three:
(This is the part where you really have to pay attention. There are several lines of html code at the bottom of your Wordle.)
Highlight ALL/>of your html code by clicking and dragging your mouse over it, being sure to select from <a all the way to </a>.
Copy (right-click copy or Control-C), which puts the selected code in the memory of your computer.
Return to our Blackboard website, select Discussions, and the forum called Wordle.
Select Create Thread. In the text box that appears write a few sentences about yourself, explaining how you came to choose the words in your Wordle.
Press Enter to move your cursor down a line. Select
<> from the text editing tools and paste the html code from your Wordle (right-click paste or Control-V) in the text box.
Select <> once more to see the result, and click Submit to make your Wordle visible in its original form.

My Work:
My Scenario: My third and fourth grade Literature Circle students will enjoy making a Wordle to introduce themselves to their classmates. They will post their Wordle on the discussion board. I will encourage my students to look for classmates that used some of the same words, and to ask a question about that connection. Later on in the class, the Wordle will also be a choice for students to use to describe a character in their literature study.
