Description:
Online platforms provide an encapsulated environment where learner interactions are facilitated with greater efficiency. In this module, we'll be reviewing three online platforms: Blackboard, and any TWO of your choice. Some examples of these are Edmodo, Moodle, Sakai, Joomla, Angel Learning, OLAT, Litmos, PrepMe, Edline, It's Learning, Sharepoint, iQity, and Haiku. We'll create an advertisement flier comparing all three platforms and post a discussion thread explaining the advertisement.
Assignment:
How It Works: Platforms or Course Management Systems
Step One: First let's familiarize ourselves with each of the platforms:
Blackboard 9.1
Since you’r e in Blackboard right now reading this, I’m going to assume that you are somewhat familiar with Blackboard and its capabilities. There are a number of Blackboard versions available with lots of toots and whistles including blogging, wikis, and podcasting. Many institutions are planning to make the jump to Bb9 which is very different from previous versions of Blackboard. Since you are probably going to be learning and/or teaching using Blackboard New Generation platforms in the near future, now is a good time to see what the buzz is about!
Access http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F65wyc4kww and view the 3.5 minute video outlining Blackboard 9 features. There are other resources to explore on the Blackboard.com site as well.
Step Two:
Then use a desktop publishing program such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Publisher to create a one-page advertisement. The purpose of this ad is to persuade users to switch to ONE of the platforms by comparing it to the features of the other TWO platforms. You should choose the platform that you are trying to sell, but must include features from all three. Make sure that your ad clearly demonstrates which platform you are selling!! Be creative and have some fun with this. Post your platform ads to the Online Platform Discussion Forum. Post a discussion forum thread explaining how you created your ad and the rationale behind the advertisement's components. Be sure to review the evaluation rubric for this activity before getting started so you will know what to include in the ad. Respond to at least three other’s postings.
My Work:
My Scenario:
My online learners will use a learning platform, and it would be my recommendation to use Sakai. But since this class is funded by the school district, the choice of platforms will undoubtedly be theirs. The class syllabus, student assignments, rubrics, and other resources will be posted on the LMS. Students will use the discussion board to engage with their group on their assignments and post their thoughts about the literature. They will be able to communicate with each other using email and with the chat features built into the LMS.
