Going Home: A sequence of nine photographs (number five is missing).

RA177

1 - This was taken from the train as we were travelling from Baghdad to Basrah. Here you see one of our machines giving us a few farewell dives on the train. You will also see from this desert we're passing through just why_ there is nothing to see the entire thousand miles from Mosul to Basrah

2 - A halt for tea at one of the "stations" in the southern desert on the way to Basrah.

3 - Here we have our first sight of the Basrah docks - the end of a long dusty journey. I took this from the carriage window as we slowly moved towards the docks

4 - Here we are!-at last aboard the SS"Vita" and slowly moving away from the quayside into mid stream and the open sea! The last sight of Iraq!

RA178

6 - Here we are slowly approaching the quayside at Karachi! Very small, drab, and unimposing is'nt it? The white ship here at resst is the troop ship "Lancashire" within is now home again at Southampton.

7 - Just after we'd landed- The SS"Vita" unloading at Karachi.

8 - SS"Vita" just before leaving for Bombay.

9 - The Indian State Railways - Bit different to the Iraq State Railways I must say - and this was taken at a halt for brakfast halfway between Karachi and Lahore. These trains and locomotives enjoy themselves at well over 90 mph!
