Acolytes

Acolyte Duties

1. Arrive 15–20 minutes before the beginning of service.

2. Dress using robe, rope, and cross.

3. Check candle-lighting-device (CLD) for sufficient wick.

4. Crucifer: Retrieve processional cross from altar area.

5. Wait in the back until the service begins. (Pastor Young will direct you.)

6. Process up the aisle to the altar during the opening hymn.

7. Light appropriate candles as directed (common, Communion, Baptism, Advent, etc.)

8. Take a seat in the first pew and participate in the service: stand, sit, sing, etc.

9. One acolyte (the crucifer, if present) hands out the offering plates to the ushers after the sermon.

10. During the closing hymn, extinguish the candles in the reverse order that they were lighted.

11. If there is a crucifer, he/she leads the way back down the center aisle to the back of the church. If not, acolyte(s) exit the altar area to the side.

12. After the announcements, return the processional cross to its place in the altar area.

13. Remove robe and pendant cross; hang them where they belong.
