Permission to examine manuscripts and photographs is not an authorization to publish them. Usually, the copyright to materials is owned by the society, a private individual, or an organization. In order to protect those rights, the society has established specific policies and procedures.

Permission to publish may be granted if the following conditions are met:

Request for Permission to Publish Photographs, Manuscripts and Archives
Permission to publish (which will ordinarily be granted) must be obtained in writing from the Director, Susie Carson Research Room. We ask in exchange that Southport Historical Society receive a copy of the finished work. In giving permission to publish a manuscript, the Southport Historical Society does not surrender its own right to publish the manuscript or to grant permission to others to publish it; nor does the society assume any responsibility for infringement of copyright, or of literary or publication rights to the manuscript held by others.

Please state in your inquiry a list of the specific items, for which, you are requesting authorization to publish. Please give precise information on the materials you wish to publish and the publication(s) in which, they are to appear. Quotations must appear in context on your request, or you may attach copies of the pages containing them.
Suggestions for Citing Materials
Publishers, professional journals, and graduate faculties all prescribe their own style, but we ask at a minimum that identification include the following: Name of collection and the Southport Historical Society/Susie Carson Research Room.
