About My Publisher

NewSouth Books, based in Montgomery, Alabama, publishes regional books of national interest. Although A Rare Titanic Family didn't take place in the South, the story is of enduring national interest! That, and my great-uncle Albert Caldwell of the Titanic spent most of his career in Richmond, Va., and is buried in Greenville, N.C.

I first ran across NewSouth Books when NewSouth partner Randall Williams (we are not related!) spoke at Samford University about a stand he took as a student there in the mid-1970s. He was the editor of the school newspaper. The university asked him to cancel coverage of a local controversy. Randall refused to do so and instead started an excellent alternative student newspaper, which eventually was recognized as one of the top collegiate newspapers in the nation. During this controversy, university officials took away Randall's scholarship, which caused him to leave school.

I'm proud to report that once this situation was brought to the current university administration's attention, Samford gave Randall back his scholarship so he could finish school... forty years later!

Here's a picture of Randall and NewSouth Books partner Suzanne LaRosa at Randall's graduation, with Randall's two sons.
