Rallapalli's work on Annamacharya

Rallapalli Anathakrishna Sharma’s work on Annamacharya

Tallapaka Annamacharya, the Srivaisnavate saint composer ( 1408 – 1503 AD ) has composed over 32,000 songs in Telugu. These songs are popularly known as ‘Sankeertanas’.  Another synonym for these songs is ‘pada’. Out of these, nearly 13,000 songs of Annamacharya, written on copper plates were discovered at the ‘sankeertana Bhandara’ in the Temple atop the sacred Tirumala hills. The authorities of the Tirumala Tirupati Devastanam ( TTD ) have got these copper plates, researched and edited by scholars and these have been printed & published.

Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma has played a significant role in this project. He involved in the research & editing work of nearly 8000 songs during 1950 – 1974. He has also set the music to 120 of these songs. Annamachraya has mentioned only the ragam of his compositions in these copper plates. Annamacharya has composed in 80 different ragas that were popular in his time, some of these ragas are very popular others are not.

There is no mention about the dhatu & talam. Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma has set the music to the songs by his vivid imagination of the possible dhatu & suitable talam, while maintaining the same ragam as mentioned in these plates; this is a special feature of his work, preserving the originality of Annamacharya’s songs. These songs have been published. The common and popular ragas are Shankarabharana, Bhairavi, Mukhari, Kambhoji etc.

Some of the ragas used by Annamacharya, were almost not in use, however  in order to revive these ragas, Rallapalli Sharma did extensive research on these ragas and set the music in these ragas only. This is another notable & unique feature of Rallapalli’s work. A few such ragas being Samantha, Shudda-vasantha, Deshakshi, Salanga-nata etc.

As a mark of recognition of his outstanding work on Annamachrya, Tirumala Tirupati Devastanams have conferred upon Rallapalli Ananthakrishna Sharma, the prestegeous title. ‘Sangeeta Sahitya Asthana Vidwan’ in 1979.
