The brothers composed these Mangalams in the early stages of their life, between the ages 10-12 to 20-22 years. Lakshmanacharya, who was afflicted with polio, died when he was only 16 years old. Lakshmanaswamy, as he was popularly called, had a mastery over the languages of Telugu and Sanskrit, and that he was composing in these languages from very early age, only establishes his genius. In addition to the Mangalams, he had also composed many Harikathas. His early death caused an irreparable loss to the Rallapalli family. In all his compositions, he used the ‘mudra’ or ‘ankita’ – “SRI MEDIPURA VASA” , which refers to the presiding deity, of the
Temple in Metikunte, Sira Taluk, Tumkur district, Karnataka. This temple is very ancient and the deity is Lord Balakrishna, holding butter in both his hand, in a standing posture. It is said that this deity was installed nearly 850 years ago, by the famous Sri Vaishnavate saint, Yamanachraya. Several Sri Vaishnavate families belonging to Rayalaseema and many parts of Karnataka, worship this God.
