Table #1 British Military in Cork Barracks 1881-1911

More than 85% of the Military were Protestant, and in 1911 many of the Roman Catholics were Scottish Highlanders. Very few of these soldiers were from Ireland, and the Census of the British Empire in 1901 suggests that it was policy for Irish troops to control India, which is sensible imperial policy as shown by the revolt of the Connaught Rangers in 1920. These figures extracted from the county census data show the number of people inside barracks. This does not include wives and children living in Army and other rented accomodation outside the barracks.
