Q: How do I know if I should contact BEAM?
You can call BEAM If you have any questions or concerns about your child's development in one or more area including but not limited to motor, speech, communication, feeding, social, play, sensory, emotional and behavioral.
Q: What age groups does BEAM serve?
BEAM supports children from birth until 3 years old.
Q: Do I need a referral from my doctor before contacting BEAM?
No. You do not need a referral from your pediatrician. Anyone can call to make a referral and services are voluntary.
Q: What can I expect after contacting BEAM?
After you contact BEAM by phone or by email, someone for our office will set up an intake appointment and initial evaluation. After the evaluation, we will inform you of your child's eligibility and provide feedback on your their development based on performance and observation. If your child qualifies, we will work together to determine outcomes and appropriate services as well as how those services will be delivered. Our services are provided through a team approach with the family members considered equal partners with providers.
Q: What does BEAM stand for?
BEAM stands for Billerica Early Assistance Model. Originally started as a Billerica-based program in the 1970's, Project BEAM now serves children and families from the surrounding communities as well.
Already part of our BEAM family? You may find answers to policy and/or procedure questions on our Current BEAM Families page.
Q: Will I have to pay for BEAM services?
No. Early Intervention services are billed to your insurance company with your consent. If EI is not covered by your particular insurance plan, the Department of Public Health will provide payment for the services. No BEAM family will receive a bill for their early intervention services.
Q: What if I don't have Health Insurance?
The Department of Public Health covers all services for those who are uninsured. If needed, BEAM staff can help you to enroll in a state funded health insurance plan for your child.
Q: What if I don't live in Billerica, can you still help me?
Yes. Project BEAM serves families from Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Lowell, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro and Westford.
Q: What happens when my child reaches his or her third birthday?
BEAM staff will work with your family to determine what services or settings are most appropriate once your child reaches their third birthday. Around age 2.6, we meet with all families to discuss the upcoming transition from EI in order to identify any community based resources of interest (including preschool). Children who may continue to require on-going services can be referred to their local school system for a special education evaluation.
