At the end of each course, I ask my students to give advice to the next semester's students. They usually have great suggestions, and I would like to share a few of them with you here. You can benefit from lessons learned by others, and I hope you will "pay it forward" when it is your turn.
"Please, take time to enjoy this course. Read, enjoy, think, and enjoy even more. Give yourself enough time to read the material early in the week so that you can let it sit and ferment. Then read it again."
"Stay organized! Keep a calendar with your due dates and finish the work early so that you don't have to worry."
"Don't be afraid to contact your teacher. Mrs. Schaelen always responded to me quickly, and I got the help I needed to move on with the class."
"Post to the discussion board as early as possible because you will have more options to choose from; there will be less chance that your idea has already been presented."
"Maintain an open mind. Really get involved with the class discussions; it is the best way to deepen your understanding."
"The grading rubrics were so helpful in understanding my grade on assignments. They showed me what Prof. Schaelen was looking for in a paper and gave me a goal to strive for. Read the rubric before you write to keep on top of what you should be doing."
"Create a routine for yourself. Since the schedule is consistent throughout the semester, you can set a routine of when to do your reading, discussion, quizzes, etc. Doing early is always better, especially when it comes to the discussion board."
"If you are confused (and it WILL happen), go to the Lounge on the discussion board to see if someone else has already answered your question. If not, ask it! My classmates and instructor were really helpful."
"Do not wait until the due date to submit the assignments. If you do, a computer problem could cause you to miss the deadline."
"Take advantage of the interactions you can have with other students. We get to see other people's perspectives and learn from each other."
