Hi, my name is Sarah Dobo. I currently am a student at Colorado State University studying Mathematics with a minor in Sociology. I am also in the Teacher Licensure Program expecting to graduate in May 2014 with my license to teach secondary mathematics.
I have lived in Colorado since 2000, and I love everything about this state. Colorado State University is helping me realize my dream of becoming a teacher. I am so excited to graduate from school so that I can be in front of the classroom teaching students.
I believe that teachers have the opportunity to create a great generation of people. If teachers create a classroom that is open to students’ ideas and lets them explore who they are, the students that leave that classroom will be better people. I hope to have an open classroom where students learn a lot of content but also how to be successful in life. My goal is to let my students learn from their mistakes, ask questions, and get what they personally need from the class. From this strategy, I believe that we, myself included, will learn from each other every day.
"The teacher is the one who gets the most out of the lessons, and the true teacher is the learner."
Elbert Hubbard
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that education is more than sitting in a classroom every day trying to obtain the correct answer. I want to be a part of a classroom that collaborates as a group to discover new ideas, concerning both math and the world around us. Therefore, I believe in a student-centered classroom where the students have the opportunities to be both leaders and learners. I imagine my classroom being a place where I, the teacher, teach content and main points, and then allow the students to explore the ideas further through practice and examples. I believe that having the students discover ideas with their peers, rather than the teacher simply telling them, gives them the confidence to pursue the subject further.
I hope to teach in a classroom and a school where there is a strong community filled with respect and collaboration. I believe that school is just as much about learning how to interact with others as it is about learning the subject content. Consequently, I want to create a classroom where every student feels welcome and safe. I want students to feel they can ask questions and share their opinions without worrying about a negative response from their peers or myself. To me, a safe classroom is one of the most important aspects in creating a learning environment.
I also think that, as a teacher, I have a responsibility to be a great role model for my students. Students spend a large part of their day at school interacting with their teachers. It is vital that students feel that they can look up to their teachers and trust them. I feel I will present myself in such a manner that students will feel comfortable asking math questions and confiding in me about other aspects of their lives. I am excited about forming those bonds so that we can build relationships and all learn from each other.
Overall, I want to demonstrate how persistence, hard work, and a passion for what you are doing will help anyone accomplish his or her goals. I hope to inspire students to do their best and pursue their ambitions, whether or not math plays a significant role. I understand that many students will dislike math and may struggle with their assignments, but I am excited for the challenge to help them achieve and gain confidence in the subject. I look forward to the opportunity to help students learn math; create a community with their peers, teachers, and the school; and become better people each and every day. Most of all, I cannot wait to learn from my students. As the writer Elbert Hubbard said, “The teacher is the one who gets the most out of the lessons, and the true teacher is the learner.”
