The Rental Week

The rent covers a stay from 3:00 pm Saturday to 10 am the following Saturday. The deposit that holds your reservation will be applied to the rent you owe. Rents are subject to Maine’s 9% rental tax and is applied to the total you owe.

Cleaning

We expect tenants to leave the houses as they found them when they arrived.

If you are staying more than one week and would like fresh linens, we will provide them for you.

Pets

Due to tenants who may have allergies, this is a pet-free property. We ask that you not bring pets with you. If you are interested in boarding a pet nearby, there are several facilities on the island in the Bar Harbor area. Just ask.

Smoking and Fires

This is a No Smoking property and outdoor fires of any kind are prohibited. Please be very careful with other forms of fire including the use of candles, gas grilles, as well as making sure the screen is always closed on wood stoves and fireplaces. Fire danger on Mt. Desert Island is often high in the summer and the nearest fire station is three and half miles away and staffed by volunteers. The eastern half of Mount Desert Island was ravaged in 1947 by an accidental fire spread by the wind. It was a lesson on how susceptible this particular environment is to nature’s destructive forces.

Contact with the outside world

For sixty years this place has been a quiet retreat for the Welch family and as such we value a level of simplicity that is manifest in limited links to the outside world. Some of us have managed, however, under pressure from the real world, to carry on our business responsibilities from this location.

  • There is one telephone line shared by the two buildings with telephones – the Rabbit Hole and the Barnacle. We encourage tenants to use mobile phones but be aware that not all cellular services work equally well in this part of Maine.

  • If you need Internet access while you are here, a WiFi connection is available at Stone's Throw.

  • Federal Express, UPS and Express Mail drop-off boxes are all available in Somesville and delivery service is available.

  • There are no televisions in the houses. The reception at this location is not very good and cable is not yet available. Please feel free to bring what you need to entertain yourselves.

What you need to bring:

Each house is fully equipped with bed linens, towels, and kitchen and eating utensils. There is a gas grille and a gas fired lobster cooking pot shared between the houses. Be sure to bring flashlights since there is no outdoor lighting for getting to and from the houses after dark. Insect repellent is a good idea if you plan to be outside during the mosquito dinner hour at dusk. Bring beach towels if you plan to swim.

If you have young children and want to use the rowboats please bring life jackets that fit them, since we may not have the right size.

If you are bringing an infant, we have a portable crib, bed rail for toddlers, high chair, and potty-chair available should you need them in any one of the houses.

Expectations and Reality

While we make every effort to make our property enjoyable for your use and pleasure, please remember that there are some things that are beyond our control: rain, fog and cold temperatures; black flies and mosquitoes; possible allergens that can inhabit seasonal cottages; noise that may be generated by others living in the area and carries easily across the water including children's voices, occasional chain saws, construction equipment, and parties. As with any rental property, something may break down during your occupancy. A family member lives on the property and is available to address any problems and help you enjoy your stay.
