Some of the questions I am asked most often are, "When do I need to start this process?" and "Are we too late?"
The answers vary depending on circumstances and ambitions but here is the schedule I like.
First consult: After sophomore year. Here, we evaluate transcript, classes taken/classes scheduled, GPA, and compare all of those to student and parental college plans. If they match well, we chart a course for the next year, offer a few schools to look at or visit, if possible, and make plans to check in mid-junior year.
Second meeting: Mid-junior year. Preferably, after PSAT scores come in. Now, we re-evaluate plans and transcripts. We discuss a more defined list of schools, and set more specific goals.
Third meeting: Post-junior year. Refine list of schools and set schedule for application season.
After that, things can get very busy, very quickly. If you have a good plan in place, though, it is all so much easier to navigate.
Many seniors will be spending their holidays finishing up applications and essays. My cohort, though, is pretty much done. If you have questions, or need a proofread, get in touch.
