Script Writing – Pre-Course Assignment #1
Summary: The first pre-course assignment is to submit a script to help the president prepare for the following motions that may arise if a quorum is lost before an important motion is disposed of: (1) Fix the Time to Which to Adjourn; (2) postpone pending question to adjourned meeting; and (3) actions to take when the presence of a quorum is lost.
Directions to course participants: Write a script for a presiding officer to follow to assist in running a meeting per Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition.
Scenario: The president fears that an important question will not be disposed of before several members depart and there is no quorum remaining. He has asked someone to propose a motion to continue the meeting a week later if the quorum is lost before the item is completed and he has also asked someone to propose postponing the question to the continued meeting if that becomes necessary. Prepare a script for the following motions that may arise: (1) Fix the Time to Which to Adjourn, (2) Postpone pending question to adjourned meeting, and (3) steps to take when a member doubts the presence of a quorum, followed by the actions that must be taken when the quorum is lost.
Prepare the script using the following parameters:
1. The script can be written in table format (similar to the NAP Study Guide for Presiding) or using paragraph format (similar to the scripting style in Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition) identifying the various speaker parts for “Presiding Officer:” and “Member:” Do not include examples of imaginary debate for members’ participation. Whenever debate would occur, simply use the word “[Debate]” as placeholder text.
2. Start your script with having the president saying: “The question is on the adoption of Motion X …”
