Analysis of Voice using phonetograms...

Material

Try to record your own voice uttering /a:/ first at your lowest F0 and lowest intensity and then slowly increase F0 and intensity to normal.

In a second recording do the same thing start at your lowest F0 and normal intensity and then slowly increase F0 and decrease intensity.

Read this recent paper by Pabon et. al. to get a swift overview of phonetograms and the usability.

A good idea is also to first read the instructions (for the whole practical).

Creating a phonetogram

  1. Create a Pitch object out of your sound recording using suitable settings (which you should be able to figure out using your analytical skills).
  2. Select you Sound object again and create an Intensity object using suitable settings (which you should be able to figure out using your analytical skills).
  3. Now select both your Pitch object and your Intensity object and a button saying "Draw (phonetogram)" should appear.
  4. Draw the phonetogram using suitable settings (according to your analytical skills) and use different colours for the two recordings (can switch colours under menu Pen in the Praat Picture window).

Report

Compare the different phonetogram objects and reflect on the differences. What is expected and what was your outcome?

Send the report to your teacher including pictures and reflections. Hopefully the literature has been useful and you can refer to it in your report.

PS. If you have time record several other types of voice changes and see how that is reflected in the phonetogram.
