Repetition...

The exercises involves recording and analysis in the software Praat (same as in the first course TPPA-1).

If you need help remembering IPA symbols and sounds go HERE ...

  1. Record the sentence "I love phonetics" as mono with 44.1kHz sampling frequency.
  2. Save the wav file and then check and note the file size in your lab report.
  3. Go back to Praat and open the sound editor window...
  4. Look at your recording in the Spectrogram...
  5. What is the Nyqvist frequency of your recording?
  6. Rearrange the settings so that the Nyqvist frequency is visible in your spectrogram.
    1. Paint your spectrogram in the Picture window with the Nyqvist frequency visible.
    2. How can we see the Nyqvist frequency of the recording and how is the Nyqvist frequency related to your sampling frequency?
  7. Resample your recording to a suitable sampling frequency for studying speech.
    1. Which sampling frequency did you choose and why?
    2. Save the recording again as a wav file and compare the file size with the original, what is the new size?
  8. Open the Sound Editor and study the spectrogram of your recording.
    1. Check the formant tracks.
    2. Look at the F0 track.
  9. Calculate your own vocal tract length based on your formant frequencies in schwa...

  10. Write answers and paste pictures into a document and upload to the Lab1 "inlämningsuppgift" on GUL...
