Classical Promotion project

Post date: Apr 10, 2018 2:02:00 PM

What do people like about the music they listen to?

Do different styles of music have different “values” or aesthetics? Do aesthetics change over time?

In this project, you must promote an upcoming concert by a Baroque, Classical, or Romantic era artist. You need to study the piece of music that will be performed at the concert, and you will need to learn about the aesthetics of the time period in order to promote the ideas in the music. Sell the concert by advertising the things that Baroque audiences would like to hear (or Classical, or Romantic era audiences).

You will promote a performance of one of the Classical composers we have studied in this unit:

Baroque era:

· "Tambourin" by Jean-Philippe Rammeau

· "Spring" from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi

· "Tocatta and Fugue in D minor" by J. S. Bach

Classical era:

· Piano concerto no. 21, movement 2 by Wolfgang Mozart

· Symphony no. 101, movement 2 "The Clock" by Franz Joseph Haydn

· Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Wolfgang Mozart

· Symphony no. 5, movement 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven

Romantic era:

· Symphony no. 5, movement 4 by Felix Mendelssohn

· “Carmen” finale from Act IV by Georges Bizet

· Siegfried's funeral march from "Die Gotterdammerung (Twilight of the Gods) by Richard Wagner

· Trio in G minor, andante by Clara Schumann

Your project must include the following:

· a concert poster or flyer describing the composer’s upcoming performances

· a social media page (classtools.net/fakebook or tinyurl.com/musicinstagramtemplate) using hashtags to promote key elements of the composer’s music

Consider the following questions as you complete this assignment:

· What are this composer’s stylistic traits? What things does the composer do consistently throughout the music? Are there any special traits they show that other composers from the time period don’t?

· What emotions does the composer evoke in this music? What techniques do they use to express these emotions?

· What guidelines or principles did composers during that time period try to follow? What techniques does your composer do to follow those guidelines? How well does the composer follow the principles or guidelines of the time period?

Students will be given concert "tickets" to use as voting chips for the artist who they would most like to see in concert, after viewing the advertising campaigns. The student whose concert "sold" the most tickets (most votes) will produce a lunchtime video performance of that artist's music, with a mini-lecture before the performance.
