Writing about music, especially as a music critic, is an important skill that musicians can use to make a living beyond performing their music.

In this project, you must write a concert review for a newspaper column. You must review a composition by one of the Classical composers we have studied in this unit.

Your review must do the following:

  • Analyze and identify stylistic traits of the artist’s music. What things does the composer do consistently throughout the music? Are there any special traits they show that other composers from the time period don’t?
  • Analyze elements of music and how they show emotion. What emotions does the composer evoke in this music? What techniques do they use to express these emotions?
  • Analyze the piece’s fit with the aesthetic of its style period. What guidelines or principles did composers during that time period try to follow? What techniques does your composer do to follow those guidelines?
  • Evaluate the piece of music based on its fit with the aesthetic of the style period. How well does the composer follow the principles or guidelines of the time period? Do other composers do a better job of fitting in with the time period? How did you enjoy the music?
