RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS (RFA)

Players are determined an “RFA” if they are 26 years of age or under.
RFAs can be resigned from 1-4 years in length (1-2 years in actual Free Agency period).

Players are classified a “UFA” if they are 27 years of age or older.
UFAs can be resigned from 1-3 years in length (1-2 years in actual Free Agency period).

Contract increases are calculated based on how many points the player recorded in the previous year in the NHL.

Example:

Player’s current salary: $850,000

Player records 36 points last year

Resign: $850,000 x 1.36 = $1,156,000

If a player recorded no NHL points in the previous season, their contract will not have an increase to resign.

To calculate the number of PHA fantasy points of a goaltender:

(W * 1.5) + (L / 2)

Where:

Example: Resigning Jonathan Quick in 2012

Current salary: $1.25M

Wins - 35

Overtime/SO Losses - 13

Shutouts - 10

Resign:

35 wins + 10 shutouts = 45

(45 * 1.5) + (13 / 2) = 67.5 + 6.5 = 74

$1,250,000 x 1.74 = $2,175,000

1st round - $925,000

2nd round - $838,000

3rd round - $750,000

4th round - $663,000

5th round - $575,000

Definitions

In the current year, teams would pay only a partial penalty cap hit since the player was bought out in-season.

S - (S * GR /164) = current year penalty.

Following years penalty is (S * 0.5).

(S * 0.5)

The result of the above equation would apply to the cap for each of the remaining years of the contract.
