I really don’t care if people are vegetarians or vegans. But I am tired of the advocacy and even political “in-your-face’ media coverage characterizing others who eat meat and fish as “wrong” – even “evil” – or more recently – “anti-environment”. The organization – “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals/PETA”, in fact has a motto – “Animals are not ours to … eat …”
Many animal species have evolved to be carnivores. And humans also evolved to be carnivores, or more accurately, omnivores – which means we eat meat and vegetables – actually anything edible. So, eating meat is natural for humans. Vegetarians and vegans are not.
There are a lot of examples of carnivores in the animal kingdom. Lions and foxes, for example, catch prey and eat meat.
A lot of animals also eat fish – including aquatic animals, such as seals and alligators.
And there are also land animals that eat fish – like bears.
In fact, birds are carnivores too. They eat meat and fish.
Even fish eat fish.
And insects are food for carnivores.
In fact, even insects eat insects.
There are even carnivorous plants that eat insects. So, even vegetables eat meat!
Reptiles are also carnivores.
Carnivores are not just wild animals. Domestic animals are carnivores also – like dogs and cats.
Of course, they also have wild relatives that are carnivores too – like wild dogs.
So, it’s natural that animals eat animals. Being a carnivore is common throughout the animal kingdom – that includes humans. Humans evolved to hunt and fish for food.
Humans have always liked to eat meat and fish. And having them prepared at a nice restaurant is a real treat.
So, it’s the vegetarians and vegans that are the exceptions. We should not be made to feel guilty or wrong about what has been natural throughout Earth’s history. And, it’s the protein we get from the meat we eat that helped develop the human brain – which distinguishes us from the apes that we evolved from – who were/are vegetarians.
By the way, why do you think humans have canine teeth? Not to eat vegetables!
