Resistance training is good for you in so many ways, including bone health, prevention of muscle atrophy, for general strength, raising metabolism, weight loss, and helping with a long list of health issues including diabetes.
You don't have to go to a gym. You can do a great resistance training routine at home with little to no equipment. Just make sure you get good advice to keep you safe and to avoid wasted effort.
To go the most out of your training and to avoid injury you need to be doing the right exercises for you. Each exercise must be performed correctly; with good form, at the correct pace, and the appropriate number of times. Exercises need to be suitable for your current level of strength and fitness and health, with provision for appropriate challenge and progress.
Most Personal Trainers will be able to write and demonstrate a programme for you that is appropriate for you in 2 or 3 sessions.
