Recently I attended a function where a group of us were casually chatting about exercise. One person realised I am a Personal Trainer and told us a story about his past experience with a Trainer. His story went something like this: “yea it was great – he made me work to my limit, then somehow he would get me past that. Sometimes I threw up, but wow he could really get me way past what I ever thought I could do.”
So I asked if he was still exercising, and if he was still using the same trainer. Needless to say it was a “no” on both accounts. His training lasted about a month - throwing up eight times was no fun anymore.
I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want to exercise till I am physically sick.
The Best Exercise for YOU
For exercise to be beneficial, you have to do it consistently, it has to be appropriate for your health and fitness level, and there has to be some challenge for you to make gains.
In my experience you have to start off with something your body is able to tolerate and enjoy, and then gradually build over time as you consistently perform you exercise regime, with some element of challenge maintained.
It is counterproductive to exercise at such intensity that you feel sick, both because you are overworking your body, but also because you are unlikely to adhere to a program that is making you feel so bad.
Choose YOUR Exercise and Trainer Well.
Remember exercise can be fun and enjoyable, and the type and intensity needs to be appropriate for you, your goals, health, fitness level and enjoyment. Choose your trainer wisely and keep letting them know how you feel.
Some time ago I put up an article on training too hard. Please check it out again here.
