Haiku Week

On the whole, I think of Facebook as either a guilty pleasure or an insidious thief of time. However, it's really good for haiku. I never really thought much about writing haiku before Facebook, but even when I'm hopelessly blocked for more ambitious work, I can always get myself to write a haiku to share on the dreaded FB. I proved this the week of September 28, 2015 by declaring it Haiku Week and challenging myself to write and post a new haiku each day about things I saw, heard, or thought on my morning walk.

Really, once I started looking for them, it seemed that haikus were everywhere.

Monday HaikuGrowling lawn tractorsexhale poisons to the windfor green illusions.

Tuesday Haiku

Indomitable, one dandelion risesfrom under fake grass.

Wednesday Haiku

Earworm in my head:I heard the tune on Sunday.WHEN WILL YOU SHUT UP?

Thursday Haiku

In your play castleDragon sulks forlorn while youstudy Common Core

Friday Haiku

Orange umbrellashelters the lit phone. Earbudscomplete the cocoon.

Bonus Haikus:

Your lawn is perfect.Mine's a disgrace to the block, but crickets sing here.

Mew! So patheticYour lap's not where I want it.This food's the wrong kind.

A couple of older FB haikus, pre-Haiku Week:

Dandelion suns, strewn through dark grass, lift my heart.Don't weed out the joy.

Bright leaves fall awayunveiling the hidden nestsof departed birds.

And a comment on the whole exercise:

Sparse syllables makeany old shit sound profoundand enigmatic.
