Eclipse

Look!

Not at the sun, but all around you:

Nothing is changed, but everything’s more what it is in this witch-light.

Shadows are proud, solid as things they stand for. This is their hour.

Colors are massive. Defiant the green of the grass in the dimming light.

Stars peer up: small flowers, shocking in whiteness.

Everything’s weighty with contrast, like the sun,

Ring of fire embracing the fervent darkness,

Too bright to see: it takes the eyes right out of you.

None of these toys, these trifling dark-lens things, can capture the least of it:

You see nothing there: a ring in a ring, a tiny concentric zero

That is not the wonder you seek. Use your eyes! Awake:

Look around: the eclipse is upon you.
