Tate reports that: "The Old Town or Stone Well was on the west side of Infirmary Street, close to where the town wall stood; and from this water is conveyed by pipes to the present Stone Well"
The original location is where the tributaries of Bow Burn converged before flowing down to the foot of Pottergate. So the area was well supplied with water, which would explain why the brewery was constructed nearby.
This structure was moved a short distance when St Andrew's Hall was constructed.
Reconstructed sandstone structure, with date plaque (1886) constructed from recycled ridge stone. At some point the stone has been painted with bitumen, and streaks are not aligned - showing that not all is in its original position. Nearby a stone water fountain of unkown origin has been repositioned in the wall of the yard.
