This page lists potential 2012 task items. It is meant to be a collaborated document with the finished items posted to the open4st TODO page.
A high level listing of the 2012 project task items. Each item should include dates and ownership.
Aspen Priority Listing: Develop a list of high priority aspen materials to propagate in 2012
30AA-U08m-5-2, 4xTG91, C173, 4xAE92 (FBIC and SLSE), CAG204, 83AA204, 15AG-8M-55-51 (AG15)
other 83xAA04 MSU "plus" clones
Brad's 80xAA04 FBIC selections
RNE - 35AA202, 9xAG91 (#3 & #17)
Investigate Early distribution model
Early materials (< 10 yrs) are experimental) - Add this disclaimer to them
Only male P. albas should be released at the next level.
The speculation is that we may be able to select effectively sterile hybrids.
Investigate the use of native aspens, the 4xTG91 FBIC plus tree and propagate via ASP. (may do this another year)
Cross1: Clone5 x 4xTG91 (FBIC plus tree)
Cross2: RNE Big Tooth x 4xTG91 (FBIC plus tree)
Cross3: Clone5 x Native small tooth Aspen (for SASP testing). Field plant Clone5 for OP breeding.
Use SASP to select clones from above crosses, also test with population seedlings and compare. Then verify that selected clones can be propagated via WASP from stool beds.
Update the ASP FAQ document as needed.
Continue development of the "Aspen Stoolbed Selections"
Breed and select diverse P. albas and their hybrids in the nursery for good rooting traits.
Minimum 2 year selection of clones for ease of propagation (Dormant and ASP cuttings), vigor and few leaf issues. All final selections will have clone IDs and will be tracked in a database.
Select ~50 P. albas by Spring 2013.
Select ~100 aspen hybrids by Spring 2015.
Distribute 1 or 2 trees each, of the above selections to cooperators that will grow them as stool beds.
The cooperators can plant them as cuttings in field tests and report results back to open4st.
Over time a list of more or less proven clones with diverse backgrounds should be developed.
Pat's 2011 Nursery Plans
Projected to have 80 to 100 P3 and 83xAA04 selections
Includes 10+- P3 parents
What to do with excess trees? Lots of:
AG15 - 98
CAG204 -114
100AA01-04 20+
Non-Pedigree P3 selections
Burn all others?
Now that we have rooting stats, Do Cooperators want any seed?
Pat's 2012 Field Plans:
Prepare for 2013 field planting of 60 P. alba stools.
Plant 83AA204 and AG15 poles - or have a cooperator do it...
Pat's 2012 Nursery Plans
Do we need to ramp up 83AA204 and AG15. If yes, schedule WASP shoots for March 1.
Discard Whole Flat materials and plans... Takes too long...
Need to include important FBIC P3 parents - Plan visit to FBIC around March 20, 2012.
3? Record sex details for all.
NURSERY PROGENY TRIALS - Select P3 clones after 2-3 year root test. Final selection criteria below:
Hardiness, dieback and survival
Disease incident - leaf and stem
Growth Parameters - Height and Syllepsis
Propagate 2011 P3 selections via cuttings
For each clone, plant 2 replications with 10 cuttings each (including rooted cutting)
Propagate 2011 P4 families via cuttings
Start 4+ flats for SASP - 3 for C173 x AG15 and 1 for CAG204 x 83AA
Send P4 seed to Rakers - 2 flats of each cross? Grow flats in nursery
2012 P4 Breeding Plans (may do this another year)?
C173 x AG15 (or reciprocal) Highest priority?
CAG204 x 83AA04 (or reciprocal) Could do 2 different 83xAA parents
83xAA x NFA
C173 x 83AA
P. grandidentata x 83AA
2012 Collection of important clones:
FBIC- C173, 30xAA92, 4xAE91, 4XTG91...
SLSE - 4XAE91, 40XAA91 (good form), 33XAA91
CSSE - CAG177, CAG204, 83xAA clones
RNE - 2 9XAG91 (#3 and #17), AG15
Post SE - 83xAA clones

Below is my tentative long term plan if we can proceed with breeding (there has to be flowers)
1) 2011-2012 - Select the best P3 albas from my 2011 nursery and roll into 2012 via dormant cutting propagation. Also save best 83x and parents. Start SASP testing in Oct.
2) Spring 2012 - Breed P4 as discussed earlier (5 or 6 crosses). Also cut branches from that FBIC 30xAA92 parent that we used for P3 and ASP propagate it.
3) Spring 2012 - P4 plants: Start 4+ flats for SASP - 3 for C173 x AG15 and 1 for CAG204 x 83AA. Have Rakers grow 1 flat of the P. alba cross and 4 flats of the other hybrid crosses. SASP selection: start with 200 -> 32 -> 20 -> 5.
4) Fall 2012 - Distribute the best P3 albas to cooperators and hopefully MSU TRC for a stool bed. Perhaps 50+ clones selected.
5) Spring 2013 - Test rooting of 6" cuttings of P4 stock - 30 to 50 per family. Also plant/test the selected SASP clones.
6) Spring 2014- Re-Test rooting of all P4 trees for dormant cutting tests.
7) Spring 2015 - Distribute P4 material to cooperators. Perhaps 100 clones would be selected because these are backcrosses, but all or most with proven rooting ability. Add these trees to a stool bed...
