With this online app, you can watch a video from ted.com, and then take a vocabulary test afterwards. When TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) started back in 1984 the latter topics were the main focus. Now, TED talks cover the full spectrum of ideas. There are over 5000 talks to choose from as of 2022.
Creating a test for a particular talk is simple. All you have to do is select whether you want to search speakers, titles, or transcripts and then click on submit once you have entered your search term. If your search transcripts, then you will have to wait a few seconds more.
If you are not sure what to watch, just select “random talk”. You can also select a random video related to a particular topic by clicking on a card at the bottom of the page.
Two tests are generated from a random section taken from the transcript. In the first test several words, usually about 10, have their letters scrambled, and your task is to unscramble them and guess the word. For the second test, the same words selected in the first test are replaced by underscores, creating an open cloze test. Your task is to fill in the missing words.
In addition to the two types of test generated, a list of important words contained in the article is also displayed, along with a table of word collocations. If found, n-grams of length 2,3 and 4 are displayed.
